Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Hi everyone,

I've had sleep apnea for a few years and I've always used a full face mask. When I was diagnosed I was automatically given a full face mask with no mention of alternatives. It hasn't really bothered me until recently. I've been waking with a sore nose where the mask rests on the nose. Normally I use cotton wool pads, but now the soreness is getting worse. I've tried adjusting the fitting but then I get leaks. So this has got me thinking about a different mask. I did read about a cloth mask, the Sleepweaver Anew, but it has bad reviews concerning leaks so I am reluctant to try it. I honestly don't know if a nasal mask/pillow will work for me? They do look less obtrusive, but I can't afford to buy one only to find it doesn't work for me. I'm unsure if I'm a mouth breather or not! So another option is a hybrid mask. I've been looking at the Mirage Liberty which covers the mouth and uses nasal pillows to seal to the nose. I would welcome any comments from users of the Mirage Liberty or comments from other "nose" sufferers.

Thanks

To be honest, it's been good and bad. On a positive side I no longer have a sore nose where the previous mask hurt the bridge. The Mirage Liberty is a great mask. It's lightweight and it doesn't make me so bothered to be wearing it. I think the clips on the straps are a bit flimsy compared to my old mask. Even though it is made by the same manufacturer, I was a bit disappointed by this. But I have slept really well. At least until last night. I was woken after a couple of hours by the increase in pressure being pumped out by the cpap machine. I have the Resmed S10 and only received it in february this year. I have just spoken to the hospital and they can't access the machine yet ( some legal issue over confidentiality) but the very helpful clinician explained that if my machine detected a leak, it would increase the pressure to try and compensate. She suggested that as I had a new mask, it was possible I had "sprung a leak" so to speak, presumably because I'm a restless sleeper, and the machine was trying to compensate. I'll try adjusting the fit tonight, and also the slightly larger nostril pieces and see if that helps. The lady at the hospital said that if I have further problems, I should go back to them for either help with fitting, or for a different mask. She was lovely. This is why it bothers me when I hear people moan about the NHS. I have only ever received great service from the doctors, nurses, clinicians etc that I have met when I had to go to hospital. They are warm and passionate people who provide superb service with limited resources. I think the do a wonderful job.
