Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

NHS or Private to get diagnosis to determine treatment

Hi,  With the help of a hope2sleep screening test indicating I may have moderate sleep apnea, I am hopefully going to get my GP to finally agree to refer me to a sleep specialist (I have been trying for 6 months).  I have some concerns over how long it might take to have an NHS sleep study and start any treatment such as CPAP.  How long does can this take?  I live in Bucks and have noted there is an option to use a Resmed private service and pay out of pocket for diagnosis. Can anyone advise if the private route is a good option for diagnosis before returning to NHS for long-term treatment?  With the symptoms I have I am desperate to avoid further months of waiting to get the evaluations completed.  Thank you.

Contact the hospital and ask how long they take to diagnose and treat a patient, some are very slow and others can be surprisingly quick, though I have a feeling you are in the slow zone.  However, it costs nothing to ask the question, maybe get your GP to ask the question, then base your decision on that.

Thanks.  I was taking this approach talking to the clinic and after I was informed it would be 8 weeks from referral to treatment plan, it now transpires that it is 4 months to a 1st appointment.  Similar for other NHS clinics too I have then looked into.  If anyone can recommend a private service in Bucks/Oxfordshire/London I would be interested to know of it.

Private and will not be cheap!  London Sleep Clinic (PRIVATE)

London Bridge Hospital  know nothing about this one.

Sleep & Snoring Institute  Know nothing about this one either,

If you are near London try getting to one of the main hospitals there, some are slow but I have heard one is a lot faster.

Good luck!  I know someone that went to the first one and had good service, but it does mean buying your own machine and supplies.

Thank you - that is very helpful

"Just to tidy this up, I finally had an in-person review by my sleep clinic yesterday, who agreed the ResMed AirSense 10 was "wheezy" and replaced the machine."

1st time and I’ve failed the mask leak test

Hi everyone, today I received my rental kit - prisma smart max, plus a Philips dreamwear mask which I’ve been wearing unconnected to try and get used to it. I just did a mask fit test using a medium mask and got a constant red/orange leak warning…See More

"Nope, I just accept that some people's throats tend to close when they sleep, due to a loss of muscle tone during deeper sleep.  Back when I was diagnosed, the sleep lab just filmed you whilst you slept, stuck an O2 meter on your finger,…"
