Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

yippee the font size works ... lol... sorry to get excited but being partially sighted it is a huge help.

Well, back to thread ...

This week I actually got two masks to try from the hospital (yes, two!)

after sticking to my guns that I needed help and was having big problems with current mask (thank you Kath for the support and giving me the confidence with knowledge) I was given an oral mask and a Quattro FX to try and then to go back in May.

This got me to thinking what everyone uses and if they are nhs and what was the 1st mask you were given? How many have you had?

Now I know that what suits one, does not suit another, and people have success with ones that I have not been able to use successfully for one reason or another ... so please do not be put off trying because of what you read! I do have several health issues and none of them promote good sleep and I do have to move around to ease pain more than some people may, so please remember this.

(I have Hose Covers and Hose Lift from www.hope2sleep.co.uk etc which were of benefit to each mask by the way)

My first mask around 12 months ago was the Resmed Mirage Quattro full face
however, being partially sighted and blind in one eye I found it terribly constricted on my vision and no glasses could be worn and the bridge of my nose was rubbed to raw and bleeding very quickly and lots of vivid straps marks ... also lots of leaks later I thought that it seemed a bit short in the face, seating just under my lower lips, but next size was too big.

Mask no. 2

Resmed Mirage Liberty - so much better - good vision and very comfortable, but did find that the nose pillows quickly lost their staying power with my nostrils - I got 3 monthly cushion/pillows replacements and even a full mask replacement at 6mths - but I finally figured out that it was a very cold nose that caused the problem.

I tried all sorts, but because of burning sweats even more heating in room is not an option - tried foil on nose, cling film ... etc (yep looked like a drunken martian).

Got up looking like Miss Piggy because I was even ramming the pillows tight upwardly but to no avail and they pinged out constantly all night.

Sooooooooooooooooooooo Mask no.3 Fisher Paykel Oracle Oral Mask

Because I have a deviated septum (which the Liberty helped actually and my nose sort of cleared a bit with the air pressure, but back to snuffling during the day) the nurse thought this was the answer.

I promised faithfully I would try it ....

I did for 6 hours - never again, it felt enormous in my mouth and my gums hurt and my jaw ached, I kept chewing on the mouthpiece and barely managed more than a doze and could not swallow without feeling blown up - and for the first time ever, I took the mask off and choked for a couple of hours with nothing on. However, there were no leaks whatsover!

Mask no. 4 oh, joy.... the new Resmed Quattro FX

Had two good nights in comparison - a little problem at first with some tiny leaks but did settle down after refixing. This one you put on bridge of nose first and then swing it down to chin before doing the straps.

It does not impact on my vision as much as the 1st Quattro and no forehead fixings. It is much more comfortable on the nose and a better fit. The top straps are a little close to under my eyes, though this is something I can cope with. No straps marks on face, just a tad pinking, and no nose soreness. I can get my glasses on, albeit a little wonkily but okay for emegency.

Well that about covers my 12 months of treatment so far ... next instalment at end of May lol. Miss Piggy look was not a good look for me, ugly enough - so am glad to be rid of that!

What's yours?

hugs Jacks xx

Resmed Quattro FX headgear

After experiencing problems with two headgears, I reported my difficulties to Resmed and sent them the "defective" items when they sent me two brand new ones.

I am delighted to copy the following, received from Resmed Abingdon:-

"I would like you to know that we have liaised with our UK Patient Interface Product Manager who has escalated the matter to our Head Office in Sydney, for further investigation."

Fingers crossed for a beefier product!

TF

I'm now using the Quattro FX, a great mask, still have a little trouble with leak on chin sometimes. I am having problems with my headgear though and will probably let Resmed UK know and send it back to them if they replace it. I've only had the mask 2 months and already it's starting to stretch and curl on fixings.

All that being said it is the most comfortable mask I've had (this is my 4th, 2 different sizes of Resmed Mirage Quattro & 1 nasal style), there are less marks on my face and no nose soreness which was a problem with the Mirage, I had tissue breakdown which was very painful.

Hi Pippa

You are exoerienciing the same faults I had with ther large size headgear. Please write to Resmed, Abingdon about yours. The more feedback the more likely we are to get a favourable result. They sent me two replacement headgeras without being asked.

@tigers fan - I have emailed Sarah Chapman as you suggested on another forum and will see what the result is. I think it's a bit silly that headgear size does not correspond to face mask size, I have a small mask with Medium size headgear and had run out of strap to adhere the ends to IYKWIM?

Hi Pippa

Indeed I DNWYM! I have a stock of self-adhesive Velcro and a pair on scissors to hand to overcome this what-can-I-stick-it-on-now? problem.

It just galls me having to pay an extra £30 for a headgear corresponding to the mask size! The medium headgear supplied with my large mask clamps the mask to my face like a limpet even at its maximum extension. I'm goging to have to invent a way of stretching the medium till it fits a large head. Rugby ball? Dangling bricks?

Good for you for writing Sarah - the more of us the better!
