Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

I’m looking for some cleaning advice but the existing threads here are quite old so I am starting a new one.

I realise that I have been appallingly lax with cleaning my ResMed AirSense CPAP which I’ve had for over 3 years. I’ve only been doing it weekly, not daily, and mostly topping up the water in the reservoir each night rather than emptying it out and refilling with fresh. It is perhaps little wonder that I’ve started to suffer with my nose blocking up when I’m in a position with my head bent down! The kit probably needs some serious sanitising without delay before it makes me ill, but I’m not sure what products to use.

I was looking at the ozone cleaner on this site but it seems ResMed don’t recommend it.  i have always used washing up liquid to clean the hose and vinegar/water to decalc the reservoir then a soak in water with washing up liquid again to get rid of the vinegar smell.  I live in a very hard water area so it is a nuisance. I’ve read that washing up liquid is not ideal, so I need to find an alternative.

Is there any good product you can recommend as a gentle antibacterial wash that won’t potentially damage the parts that need regular washing, I can’t wash my mask because it has the memory foam edge so that just gets a wipe over with CPAP wipes (when I think about it)!

Hi Sally

You're right that we do have to keep a good cleaning regime with our CPAP and daily mask cleaning will help prevent leakage, as a lot of this is caused due to facial oils left behind on the mask cushion.

Resmed have recently published a statement saying the warranty will be void if using the SoClean with their Airsense 10 range of machines. They have said the use of ozone cleaners can cause a noisy motor. However, although we can't advise against this statement we can say that we've heard of many issues with noisy Airsense 10 machines from people who have never used an ozone cleaner with their machines. In fact just yesterday one of our Facebook group members told us she had to have a brand new noisy machine replaced. The ozone cleaners are more for sanitising than cleaning though, and if you have a look at this link on our website you'll see a whole section on cleaning https://www.hope2sleep.co.uk/tips-for-problems-sleeping-with-cpap-o...
