CPAP BACTERIAL FILTER (One) - For Allergy Sufferers - Also quietens down the noise from CPAP
I purchased a CPAP BACTERIAL FILTER (One) - For Allergy Sufferers from the Hope2Sleep Shop as I thought this may help my blocked nose issue. After only one night it is too early to report on that issue, however when connected to my Phillips System One RemStar Auto with A-Flex and Humidifier I was very pleasently surprised to find how it significantly quietened down the noise from the CPAP machine. Well worth buying the product if only for that reason alone.
Before anyone asks it is not an April 1st wind up! Honest.

Oh! Oh! I had thought these were a screw or clip together case with a disposable filter pad - now I think the whole unit is disposable or throw-away. Can you clarify, please, Kath?

That's an interesting observation Snoreyhead, as I hadn't noticed about the sound issue, but have just tested it on the same machine as yours and you're right. I suppose I'd not noticed as noise doesn't particularly bother me - I can sleep through anything!
On another post I'd mentioned I've been using these filters (and will be continuing) since I observed the difference between a new and used one. These filters are prescribed for people on ventilators with conditions like COPD, bad asthma etc. This, I think, is why they are only supposed to be used for a short period, but the pictures below my own unedited ones showing a new bacterial filter and one that was on my machine for approx a month. My machine had also recently been replaced only 2 months before this. I was so surprised that I contacted another customer who'd recently bought some (who is also a member of this forum) and he confirmed his results were similar. For the record, our bedroom gets hoovered once a week and is carpeted. Perhaps laminate might be better I'm wondering.

Having seen the colour change in these filters I would be worried except for the fact that I have survived for four years without one. I am amazed at the muck they are - it is - removing from the air I breathe! I renewed the coarse and fine filters in my 'M' Series APAP when I fitted one of these in-line filters, taking particular care to fit them correctly to minimise leakage around the edges.
As a city dwellerf, what really concerns me is the quality of air I breathe throughout the day and non-APAP hours! I was way out in the woods yesterday and kept on noticing the clean, fresh smell and feel of the air. I guess mid-Pacific air is the best I have ever breathed - no need for filters at all, at all!

How do you make these work with a heated hose - insert them at the mask end (not good with a sleepweaver?)

I wouldn't like to have to use it between the mask and hose as it would be bulky. They're not designed for use with the heated hoses, except the Hybernite one.
I used to have a heated hose with my Fisher Paykel machine and I don't notice any difference whatsoever in using my current Respironics or Devilbiss unheated hoses with the fleece hose covers. I've also spoken with people who have the Resmed S9 and have bought the 'normal' hoses as they prefer them to the heated one. Suppose, yet again, it's everyone's preference. I don't have a preference myself, but just haven't noticed any difference. I daresay that people with big humidity problems might though.

Having two machines, and having travelled for six nights last week with my old machine and its non-heated hose, I missed the heat!

Interesting Symmit. Like I said - again it's all a matter of preference isn't it? Lots of people are ok with CPAP chinstraps, but I hate them with a passion :D

I can't comment on filters (too new to cpap) but I can about carpets v laminate flooring. I switched from the former to the latter to help tackle my often blocked nose (I have perennial rhinitis due to an allergy to house dust mites). It made a massive difference and my nose is much less blocked up at home than it used to be. There's so much less dust with laminate wood flooring when compared with carpets. I would recommend it to anyone with a similar problem.
