Hi Carolyn
Firstly, please don't apologise for 'whinging or ranting' as if you can't do that here, then where else can you? We truly understand and are pleased you were brave enough to admit your fears and post them here.
Even now there are occasions when I go to bed and think that I have to use the CPAP for the rest of my life. Now and then I think we're entitled to feel sorry for ourselves. I try to tell myself that it could be worse...... some people are hooked up to oxygen masks and machines during the day and at least ours is behind closed doors on a night.
I was very worried about the heart attack risk when I was diagnosed, especially as my own mother most likely had undiagnosed sleep apnoea and had a fatal heart attack at the age of 49. This was why I was determined I was going to make sure I used the CPAP every night.
It is very understandable that you are worried about the risk of strokes, especially bearing in mind you've already had one and your father having died from one, but you have really increased your odds of NOT having a stroke now that you're on the treatment. Most of what you read regarding risks of heart attacks and strokes etc., are referring to undiagnosed sleep apnoea.
I hope others on here can give you some words of comfort, but remember you are not alone!
Hi Carolyn
I wonder if you get as upset at being called Caroline as a secretary I knew years ago. Boy, she got fierce!
Your fears about stroke and heart attacks are about UNtreated OSA. If you use you machine effectively, you pretty much obviate any risk. People get upset when a health problem reminds them of their mortality - I've just had a blood sugar scare - and at the same time ignore other great risks in their lives. Driving, walking by a road, crossing the road are all very dangerous things to do. You get into a taxi without even knowing the cabbie's name, let alone how good he is as a driver!
Another great health risk - kills a lot of people - is worrying. Stop worrying and start living, certain sure in the knowledge that our end comes to us all, in it's own good time. You'll be good if you let yourself be.
i still dont use my machine..........sometimes i think if im going to die, id rather it was in my sleep. my family dont know how i really feel, but i supose depression is part of having a restless sleep thru the night. Dont go to the hospital for check ups anymore, dont see the point. i struggled with my machine and the only advice i got was keep trying to use it more.
Carolyn depression or symptoms like / mistaken for depression can come from untreated sleep apnea as you have no energy feel lethargic and can be emotional mood swings etc my husband went untreated for years and was on antidepressants as it went undiagnosed after starting treatment he is so much better ..... My husband took the fact he had to use cpap for life as a shock he couldnt believe it and was taken aback after breaking it down to him he now realises that wearing cpap each night is infact reducing the risk hugely and he can now live life and not just exist
I hope that you can come to terms with using cpap and it makes a hige difference to the way you are feeling right now
