I have recived a letter from papworth explaining when i was monitored that i had a mean saturation of 94.7% and a desaturation index of 4.54 i do not know what these terms mean can anyone tell me if this is the norm
I have also been told of a legal obligation to inform the DVLA of my diagnosis and treatment i was never told this when i was discharged from papworth did anyone else have to do this and does it mean i will not be allowed to drive please.
Thanks Mike.

The Desaturation Index is the amount of oxygen drops per hour, which will no doubt be linked to the amount of apnoeas per hour you had, although it could be more as not all apnoeas cause big oxygen drops. The Mean Saturation of 94.7% is the average your oxygen dropped to, which is pretty good as I'm told medics like it to be above 90 in a person with OSA during sleep. All in all, in my non-medical opinion, your results sound pretty good. I'm assuming this pulse ox test was done whilst on CPAP?
As for the DVLA, hospitals normally advise people to stop driving once they are diagnosed and untreated (I had to stop driving for 3 months until my OSA was being treated properly). You do need to inform the DVLA, but it's not normally a problem. Here's a link to the DVLA + OSA and on that page you'll see you can download the SL1 Form you need. Also, if you type in DVLA in the search bar (at the top right of this page next to your name) you will find lots more places we've discussed it on here.
