Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

I am into my 5th year of sleep problems. Have been attending drmackays clinic for four years. Have tried everything, different types of cpap. Although the more advanced one, For complex sleep issues reduced the breath holding sygnificantl. It did not improve my tiredness. I have been for several overnight and day tests etc. test indicate my major problem is that I don't seem to get into the zone that gives good satisfying sleep.

Issues, memory very poor. Tired all the time to the point of exhaustion. Sleeping more and more. Every afternoon. Seems the more I sleep the more tired I am... I have had other issues, TIAs. Severe headaches almost on a daily basis. Basically I am completely physically and mentally exhausted. Unable to undertake anything that requires physically effort.

Prior to this happening I was a very fit outdoors person, hill walker, swimmer, cyclist etc. have sold my golf clubs, bicycle, etc.. Fall asleep all the time can't even get through a movie, concert, etc etc. doc mckays view is that something has went wrong in my brain but he has no idea what and thus how to reverse it... Anyway latest idea is to try a gumshield, custom made. Anyone tried these and have they helped? My own view is "clutching straws" but I will try anything as I can't go on physically or psychologically as I am.. No life!!!

Cheers.

Oh David....I wish I'd seen your post last week.  I'm actually currently travelling home from the SASA (Scottish Association for Sleep Apnoea) Conference.  I was speaking there and so was Dr Tom Mackay.  Anyway, I hope you knew about the Conference and was perhaps there.

It's horrid when people are using their machines and still experiencing daytime fatigue and you're certainly with a good sleep consultant.  Can I ask if you've had your blood gases checked to make sure you're not retaining carbon dioxide?  I was and had to be taken off CPAP and put on VPAP.  Also, do you use your machine for ALL sleeps and how many hours do you manage?

I'm not sure why a gumshield would work though, assuming you're on good PAP therapy, despite the fatigue.

"Just to tidy this up, I finally had an in-person review by my sleep clinic yesterday, who agreed the ResMed AirSense 10 was "wheezy" and replaced the machine."

1st time and I’ve failed the mask leak test

Hi everyone, today I received my rental kit - prisma smart max, plus a Philips dreamwear mask which I’ve been wearing unconnected to try and get used to it. I just did a mask fit test using a medium mask and got a constant red/orange leak warning…See More

Jonathan replied to John's discussion Has anyone been told root cause of their OSA?
"Nope, I just accept that some people's throats tend to close when they sleep, due to a loss of muscle tone during deeper sleep.  Back when I was diagnosed, the sleep lab just filmed you whilst you slept, stuck an O2 meter on your finger,…"

"There's some information here, but generally it's very common and likely due to our anatomy."
