Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

I've not posted in this forum for over a year and would like to share my experience with Sleep Apnoea and how I solved it.

I believed after the first 2 days using my APAP device in December 2014 that my Sleep Apnoea was Positional.

Since then I have not been sleeping on my back but using a system to keep me sleeping on my side.

I have my own Oximeter and have found that when sleeping on my side the PO2 results were satisfactory whether I used my APAP device or not.

On the night of 1st September (2015) I used a NHS provided Oximeter, slept on my side, did not use my APAP device and was told the results on the 7th.

The results were satisfactory and the NHS nurse technician was happy for me to return my APAP device to the NHS.

My solution to force side sleeping was to stuff a backpack with two towels each tightly rolled up and secured with duct tape. I taped a long hard plastic cylinder between them and put the whole lot vertically in a suitable backpack.

I secured the backpack to my body with a neoprene body belt to stop the backpack rotating around my body.

Thanks for sharing this Michael.  It's great to hear your oxygen levels are good when sleeping on your side.  It would have been interesting to know if there were no apnoeas/hypopnoeas as well (bearing in mind that not all events cause oxygen desaturations).  I guess you are actually 'feeling' the daytime benefits though of hopefully no longer having apnoeas or you wouldn't have wanted to hand back the CPAP into the NHS.   Best Wishes for Good Health and Sleep

Indeed. I had done much research on sleeping positions and do sleep on my RHS. Also I had found before finding out about my sleep apnoeas that when lying on my LHS I could feel the expansion of my beating heart on the surface of the bed mattress and was uncomfortable with that.
