Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

He had the sleep study, well he had an overnight trace not a polysomnography and that showed he had a bad case of OSA, that was all done with the sleep physiologist who was lovely. The consultant saw him yesterday and it was awful he was rude and arrogant he said yes you have OSA we can leave it and do nothing or you can try cpap but it won't stop the snoring! I told him about Emil knowing how untreated everyone is about their maybe been a genetic connection but he looked at Pete my partner and said, 'your fat lose weight and it might go away!' Pete is about a stone over weight if that and I can't believe how rude he was, I saw the trace and I could see he had de saturated to about 70% for prolonged periods of time and numerous times. I can't belive after having a heart attack as well he said you can leave it! We weren't in two minutes. Pete wanted to go home but I managed to talk him into waiting to see the sleep physiologist who again stressed how important cpap is. So, he's having a trial with an APAP and they will work a pressure out from that. He goes in two weeks for mask fitting and to collect the machine.
Can't believe the consultant he was awful even knowing Pete has a huge deep scar on his neck from an accident at work and he fobbed that off and said again no it's cos ur fat. Very degrading and upsetting!

This is dreadful Rachel and I hope the physiologist does something about the consultant's attitude.  Thank goodness your partner has you, as the fact that you persuaded him to continue to see the physiologist could well have saved him from more future bad health through untreated sleep apnoea.  I just wonder how many other patient's are continuing without treatment after having such a bad consultation with a so-called 'expert.'  Words fail me :(

It's ridiculous, no one deserves to be spoken to like that.

I told my doctor straight, it took me 38 years to get this big it can take a few years to get back to a normal weight - the CPAP is helping.

Once you've got the therapy you need a strong letter should be sent regarding the consultant's attitude.

I think if that was me or my partner I would be making a complaint to the hospital via patient services!  That's shocking! :(

OMG your poor husband but sadly it does not suprise me my hubby got told he was over weight loss his gut and double chin and hed be fine

I didnt swallow this and was kinda mad so went to another doctor who referred him for a sleep study and he came home with CPAP

he had no energy to exercise when untreated so how they expected him to loose weight is crazy since being on Cpap he lost 2.5 stone

I agree dont let them of with the attitude they need PR training ...... we are currently dealing with spos and our nhs complaint regarding Travis

I hope your hubby adjusts to life with his machine and it does him the world of good

I would definately complain. If you have to see him again it might help to remind him he is working for you, and getting a nice fat salary I guess, and you don't have to put up with being spoken to like that. You could also choose another consultant, if there is another at the hospital. I will not take any rubbish of any surgeon or consultant anymore. I have many complaints and all of my consultants and surgeon are great. I think they have heard about me hahahahahaha. Don't forget we pay their wages and they work for us.

CPAP Total Face Mask

I was curious whether anyone has used the CPAP Total Face Masks and could pass on their observations? I've been using an Airfit F20 for years which is fine apart from the permanent red mark on the bridge of my nose, and have recently tried the…See More
