Hi, this is my first post. I am new to a cpap machine. I got my machine about 5 weeks ago. I start each night well, my nasal pillows, seem to fit well and i go off to sleep quickly. However, after about an hour and a half, I wake up as the pilows no longer seem to fit and I can't get a seal. It feels like my nose has changed shape! I then spend a restless time, awake , a sleep until I get to the 4 hour mark, then i can take it off. I feel i get a better sleep without the machine.
Does anyone have any advice please?
I don't feel i can use a face mask as i get very irritated skin.

Hi Bev. Your problem could simply be that the nasal pillows you're using are not the correct size and if you're on auto pressures, when the machine raises pressure to treat your apnoeas they dislodge. It could also be due to your body temperature changing as well though, so if you don't have different sizes to try I would ask your clinic. When people are new to CPAP they can struggle with nasal pillows so it's often better to start CPAP therapy with a 'normal' nasal mask. There are also Mask Liners that can be placed between the mask and skin for people who get irritations, leaks or skin marks.
For people who struggle with pillows, Respironics have also brought out the DreamWear mask which is a new concept, in that there are no nasal pillows, as the mask sits under the nose, so you could ask your clinic if they can supply that one to try.
I do understand what you mean when you say you feel like you get better sleep without the therapy as I used to feel the same many years ago when struggling to find the 'right' mask myself, but the truth is that without the machine we're fighting for survival against the apnoeas, even though we're unaware of this! When you get these issues sorted and start to feel the daytime benefits of good safe sleep things will be much better. A sleep consultant I know well has a saying "you have to kiss many frogs until you find your prince" and that's so true for many people (myself included).
Good luck with getting this sorted :)
