new resmed s9 machine
hi everyone
I have been using my new machine for nearly a week now, but I have noticed that if I have to put the machine into standby whilst I go to the toilet in the middle of the night when I switch it on again it goes into what I can only describe as a pulsed humming sound which is loud enough to keep me from going back off to sleep, then seems to diminish when it has got back up to my pressure.
is this normal or do I need to contact the clinic at the hospital for them to check the machine, when I put it on for the first time when I go to bed it's quiet. any help would be appreciated. also does anyone know if the hospital will supply me with a chin strap to keep my mouth shut when asleep.

When you say standby Bob, do you mean you switch it off with the power button? I use a VPAP (which is in the same series as the S9) but haven't noticed this. Try taking the plug out of the wall and out of the back of the machine which should clear anything if it's a temporary issue.

I switch it off at the power button which means it is in stand bye mode, then when I press the button again it starts up the pump. even my wife can hear the pulsed humming sound which seems to disappear after it has got back up to my prescription of 12. it does not do it when I first go to bed even though it has been in stand bye all day. as understand it when the machine is plugged in to the wall socket and switched on it is either working or in stand bye but it is always powered up if that make's sense. i did not notice any noise when i had the loan machine on the first night of use. i am now using a nose mask which I find preferable but I sometimes open my mouth while asleep so I think I need a chin strap

Ah yes I thought that's what you meant. It definitely doesn't happen to me. Try unplugging everything and if that doesn't clear it then definitely let the hospital know.
It sounds like you mouth breathe during the night so a chin strap may help. They don't work well for everyone though (me included) so maybe it would be worth considering a full face mask and there are smaller versions of these out now which are quite minimalistic. I have 3 favourite masks.....the huge FitLife, but the other 2 are minimalistic ones....the Hybrid and the Amara View so worth asking your hospital if they stock either of those to try.

Sounds like the motor is being pulsed up slowly to speed again.
If you have a Ramp turned on try turning it off just to see what happens.
It might not be noticeably when the machine is cold, but after being hot the motor might be slightly more noisy when stepping up to speed.
The hospital will normally supply a chin strap.

hi there I assume when you say ramping up I would know it as the pressure building up , the hospital have set the machine for me so I have not messed with it starting at 4 increasing to 12. I mean if this is quite normal I guess I will have to get used to it over time, it's more of a nuisance than a problem. trying to keep the mask on all night is the problem seven hours is all I can manage at the moment, but it's still only a week so maybe I am being a bit hard on myself. however thanks for the reply it all helps.

You're doing great in these early days Bob. I've never heard of a difference in noise when re-starting the machines with ramps, and I'm sure if it was common we'd have heard this before - especially in the Facebook Group with over 5,000 members. Mention it to your clinic on Tuesday, and also tell them about the mouth breathing so they can consider a different mask or a chin strap.

4 is a bit low, machines are usually set a bit higher than this, the nearer it is to the pressure you require the better treatment usually is, I say usually as there can be other things creep in, but I would have thought it should be at 8 at least, though when it starts it will start at 4 and quickly move up to its low setting.
I have moved my low pressure up and I find it is a lot better with the low pressure nearer the normal working pressure.
However, I think there might be a fault with your machine as when I get up and restart my machine it just starts the same as when it did first thing at night. If it is annoying ask the clinic to look at it, they will usually change it and swap over your data card.
