Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

I'm very frastrated! First week on CPAP, they gave me a wisp mask. I could not handle it. My sinus were going crazy. My doctor said I needed to change mask due to the pressure. Not only that, my mouth and throat were dry and I used that stupid chin strip - forget it! I'm at a 10 on my pressure. So now I'm using a nasal mask. I can't get u se to it. First night, I woke up, my mouth was try. Second night, which was last night, it felt like air was hitting my eye, then the heaviness on my face. I tried to adjust but, I couldn't get it to work. I even tried different levels on the humidity. Has anyone on here had any issues like this and what other mask has worked. I would really like to wake up feeling refreshed then tired. I do not have servere sleep apnea.

Sorry for a few different words. My cell phone feels the wording should be something else.

I hear your frustration.  Try your humidity on medium to high for dryness

As for the type of mask you are using, you may have to try a few, even of the same type before you get one that will work for you.  Main thing is not to over tighten the mask, put it on when you lay down, adjust for comfort, but not to tight, now turn on your machine of full pressure (do not take deep breaths or you get used to the pressure) now adjust the mask for leaks.  When you are happy, put the machine on to ramp if you wish.

It can be quite normal to have to adjust the mask at least once during the night due to small changes in your face shape during the night or expansion of mask or headgear, but just repeat above or tighten it slightly, but don't be tempted to over tighten the mask.  Most masks rely on a seal that expands out to form a seal against your skin ounce pressure rises.  A bit like the skirt of a hovercraft.

But don't give up, you will get used to it and you will find a mask that works for you.

It is very early days for you yet, most people take at least a few weeks to settle in.

If you have any more problems please pop back and we can see if we can give you some advice.  :-)

I forgot to ask if you are a mouth breather or a nose breather while you sleep?

How's it going PQuinn?  As Sleep2snore says it can be frustrating at first for us and getting the right mask and correct fitting is the most important part.  My own sleep consultant says "you have to kiss many frogs until you find your prince" and this is so true for many of us.  I too had great difficulty getting the 'right' mask, and no matter what mask others recommend, it is always a case of 'what works for one person doesn't always work for another.'  Of course, when these problems are happening with the masks it's causing interrupted sleep, and that often results in people suffering even more daytime tiredness than before they went onto CPAP.  Believe me, I've been there!

If you're still struggling then let us know which mask you're using and what the problems are now.

I was curious whether anyone has used the CPAP Total Face Masks and could pass on their observations? I've been using an Airfit F20 for years which is fine apart from the permanent red mark on the bridge of my nose, and have recently tried the…See More

HiI'm using the prisma smart max machine. Initially I was just on a nasal mask, this changed as I was sleeping with my mouth open. I then went to face and nose mask and complained of bad wind and belching. Sometimes the pressure in the night was…See More
