Night Sweats?
Hi, I am new to this forum. My husband has had sleep apnoea since his early 30s, he is now 50. He is not overweight, does not drink or smoke. He has central and obstructive and has used CPAP therapy since he was diagnosed. He has just had a sleep study, with and without the CPAP machine, because even though he has used CPAP it has never worked and he is still extremely tired. The study showed that without CPAP he stops breathing 24 - 30 times an hour, but with CPAP 2.5 times. So the CPAP is doing its job. However, other factors wake him up during the night and one of these is night sweats. Does anyone else suffer these? In the morning his side of the bed is decidely damp due to his excessive sweating. Does anyone know if there is a way to stop the sweats? Thanks

Sorry for the delay Sharon. Night sweats is certainly a sign of untreated sleep apnoea. However, you say that with a CPAP, although he's not feeling the benefits regarding his constant tiredness, his AHI is showing 'normal' levels of 2.5 which is good. There's a few things to think about here:-
- I'm assuming he uses his CPAP every night (when the sweating is bad)?
- Do you know the cause of his central sleep apnoea?
- Although CPAP can treat central sleep apnoea to a degree, ASV (Adaptive Servo Ventilation) is the better machine to be using for centrals and mixed sleep apnoea. Unfortunately, not all the hospitals have enough funding for these machines. In fact just a few minutes ago I was speaking to a man in the Facebook Group who struggled with his CPAP, and he's just had a sleep study at a different hospital who are now going to try him on different types of machines to see what suits him.
- Another thing to bear in mind is that there can be other causes of night sweats, such as certain medications, hormone issues (yes, even in men) and some medical conditions. There's a link here to the NHS website http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/night-sweats/Pages/Introduction.aspx
- Assuming your husband's CPAP therapy is working well, I would ask your GP to run blood tests for diabetes, hypothyroidism, B12/Iron + Vitamin D. These are all commonly linked to people with sleep apnoea and can all cause tiredness.

I also experienced night sweats for some time. It turned out that the problem was caused by low testosterone - which can itself be due to OSA, among other things.
My advice is for your husband to talk to his GP about it and ask for a blood test for testosterone (& for prolactin - because low prolactin can cause testosterone to be low, as it did in my case).
