Now Got A CPAP
So today I went to get fitted with a CPAP (was originally supposed to be tomorrow, but I moved it forward to today).
I have be given a Respironics System One Auto-CPAP with humidifier. The mask I have been given is a full face Fisher & Paykel Simplus in medium size (was surprised at the size, they first tried small and thought it was OK; I was expecting a large).
During the fitting I was left alone for 20-30 minutes to try and sleep (I didn't managed to sleep) hooked up to an old Remstar Auto-CPAP, which had an obvious A-Flex programmed, but the machine I have isn't obvious at all, which as far as I can tell in the settings is turned on.
The CPAP starts at a pressure of 4.5, so it will be interesting to see what pressure it reaches tonight. Also not sure how I am going to get on with the Simplus mask, because it feels as if when my mouth opens it is going to break the seal, due to seal being just below my mouth.
I already have a review booked at the hospital in 17 days time.
Just need to find a better way of fastening the tube to my headboard (which is a tube about 1.5" in diameter) that can be quickly removed and put back into place.

Good to hear you have your machine, and impressive you were left for a while to try it with the mask in the hospital as most clinics don't do that. This Simplus is a generous sized mask, and is a good one too. If it was too big it would have leaked into the eyes.
If you stay on CPAP therapy (assuming it's successful) to keep the hose out of the way I would highly recommend the CPAP Hose Lift, which is the best invention ever for CPAP for several different reasons. I take mine everywhere with me and hate CPAP without it. In fact when people get one they say they wondered how they managed before!

Well last night wasn't to bad. :)
I can't really tell if the A-Flex is working, the mask didn't leak, but I did feel as if my mouth would drop out the bottom of the mask.
The humidifier was set to 5 and it used about 50% of the water, but the air wasn't warm. :(
From looking at the data on the machine this morning, the 90% pressure was 11.5 and the AHI was 1.5.

So last night wasn't as good as the first night. I woke up with a leaking mask (was leaking at the sides and chin). No adjusting of the mask worked, so I looked at what pressure the machine was running at and it was 16 (don't know how long it was running that high for).
The only way I could stop the mask from leaking was to activate the ramp, so knocking it down to 4.5. The ramp is actually a higher pressure than what the machine starts at, which seems wrong to me (machine starts at 4).

Leaks are one of the biggest bugbears with cpap therapy. It can take quite a while to work out how to minimise leaks, but it's definitely worth persevering with.
The hose that Kath mentioned can help, among its many benefits. As she says,once you've got one, you wonder how you ever managed without it.

Hi Airbus,
I've only just read your previous post and now realise that you had difficulty getting a machine following your tests. As Kath says, it's really Important to know what your AHI score was during the hospital test as that indicates the degree of severity of your OSA and whether you need therapy to address it.

Have you managed to cure the leaks Airbus in order to get decent therapy with data? In the interim period whilst you're on the CPAP trial, try making a mask liner and you'll see more on this discussion http://hope2sleepguide.co.uk/forum/topics/masks-and-air-leaks

Hi Kath,I haven't managed to stop all the leaks, the mask appears to leak when the pressure goes above 11 (well the pressure has been 11 or above when I have woken up due to leaks).
I have asked for a different mask from the hospital (one that fits under the chin), to see if that can get rid of the leaks around the chin area. Just waiting to here from them.
