Cunningham MP Sharon Bird has vowed to take up the concerns of Illawarra specialists who fear tonsillectomies will be axed from the Medicare Benefits Schedule.
Wollongong pediatrician and sleep disorder specialist Terry Sands is the latest doctor to express concern about the government's review of ear, nose and throat services.
"Why are they even looking at it?" Dr Sands said yesterday.

"Obviously someone thinks it's a way to save money but when you look at all the implications of sleep apnoea and how much of an increase in resources they use if the condition is untreated in children, then there is no saving there," he said.
The government said the review was to consider "the best available evidence of surgical services associated with the management of sleep apnoea, ear grommets and tonsillectomy".
Dr Sands said there was an abundance of research to show that "even simple snoring" had a negative effect on children............
