Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

I wondered if any CPAP users have experienced any side effects from their CPAP use.

I suffer with dry eye syndrome, they think this is due to air leakages from my face mask. I have to use an eye gel at night and drips in the day. This has generally prevented any issues. I've had the odd scratch on eye but nothing serious until Saturday, I woke up with a very sore eye. I went to local minor injuries unit who diagnosed an abrasion and prescribed anti biotic drops. Yesterday I woke with severe pain and clouded vision in right eye. I went to a and e and they have diagnosed a corneal ulcer on eye.

They think abrasion could be as simple as me not massaging eye in morning before opening them.

I just wondered if anyone else suffers like this and what they might do to elevate this happening again.

Thanks Mauro

Sorry you've had no response to this post Mauro as I was hoping someone may have an answer, as corneal ulcer's isn't something I've heard of caused by CPAP.  However, we do often warn of why it's important to ensure the masks aren't leaking into the eyes because that's not good for them at all!

There several eye conditions linked with sleep apnoea itself though, and this is a good link I've shared often about this https://www.aao.org/eyenet/article/obstructive-sleep-apnea-eye-opht...  It's yet another reason why it's important for people to be treated for their sleep apnoea.  I used to suffer from Floppy Eye Syndrome before I was diagnosed and research has even stated 100% of people with this also have sleep apnoea.  My eyes are much healthier since I've been on CPAP, apart from age catching up with me now!

If you haven't tried mask liners then that would be worth doing as they help lots of people with mask leaks http://www.hope2sleep.co.uk/silent-night-mask-liners.html  Many people also find they can loosen the mask straps slightly whilst using them.  Perhaps your clinic could help too with trying you with a different mask to minimise the mask leaks.

I hope things are improving since you posted.

Hi Kath, thanks for your reply.

Just had an eye Clinic appointment and consultant fairly certain that this is attributable to mask leakage. I suffer with dry eyes and have prescribed gels and drops anyway, need to put more gel in. I will try some mask liners and catch up with my sleep clinic.

Thanks

1st time and I’ve failed the mask leak test

Hi everyone, today I received my rental kit - prisma smart max, plus a Philips dreamwear mask which I’ve been wearing unconnected to try and get used to it. I just did a mask fit test using a medium mask and got a constant red/orange leak warning…See More

"Nope, I just accept that some people's throats tend to close when they sleep, due to a loss of muscle tone during deeper sleep.  Back when I was diagnosed, the sleep lab just filmed you whilst you slept, stuck an O2 meter on your finger,…"
