Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Hi Kath and everybody. My name is Raza and am new to this forum. It feels really good to sound out people who have first hand experience of sleep apnoea. I am 72 not overweight and do not drink or smoke. I had a mini stroke,cerebellum, just before Christmas and since then sleep has been very disturbed. I wake three or four times, tired dazed and mildly confused. I have to sit up for a few minutes to adjust before hitting the pillow. Sleep follows instantly is heavy and unrefreshing. Daytime is marked by tiredness and sleepiness. I have been referred to the sleep clinic but have not heard anything, perhaps for obvious reasons of Covid and so on.
I have some questions. Has anyone experienced anything similar following TIA or stroke as in sudden onset of sleep disorder. Also I am wondering whether my symptoms are more akin to central rather than obstructive sleep apnoea and if so whether the Hope2Sleep testing equipment,if available, will pick up the problem anyway. Lastly I have been tracking sleep patterns on Fitbit sense and the estimated oxygen variations have been consistently high. Is this significant?

Hi Raza and glad you found us.

Firstly to say, there are many of us who aren't overweight, smokers or regular drinkers (mine's severe), as the main reason for sleep apnoea is due to craniofacial issues that we inherit, but of course being overweight or regular alcohol drinkers will certainly make this worse.  So often it's the untreated sleep apnoea that causes weight gain due to choice of wrong foods for energy due to the sleep deprivation.  Plus in REM sleep we burn calories and patients with sleep apnoea get thrown out of REM sleep regularly through the night as it's where most apnoeas happen.  Smoking to a smaller degree, surprisingly in the case of sleep apnoea, even though it's obviously not a good thing to do.  See the information on our main charity website about sleep apnoea https://www.hope2sleep.co.uk/sleep-apnoea-information.html 

As for the TIA, that's definitely a red flag to get a sleep study and in fact there's a quote on this link “I think the implications of the study are that patients with stroke and TIA should receive early diagnostic testing with a sleep study" https://www.physiciansweekly.com/treating-sleep-apnea-may/  You'll find many other links on the internet about trials and research into sleep apnoea in patients who have had TIA's.  In fact you'll find a patient story on our own website from our own treasurer who wished she'd not ignored the signs of sleep apnoea that she believes lead to her own TIA https://www.hope2sleep.co.uk/sleep-apnoea-patient-stories-karen.html

Oxygen desaturations during sleep are a sure sign that apnoeas and/or hypopnoeas are happening, and I'd encourage you to get a sleep study as soon as you can.  Our own diagnostic sleep service is for obstructive sleep apnoea, as due to COVID we're having to keep the testing as simple as possible due to less contact, but the sleep consultant who carries out the diagnoses is very competent in recognising signs of central sleep apnoea as opposed to obstructive, although most people do have the obstructive form.
