Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Hi

Its just under a year now that I've had my machine, and I have lost 5st in weight, I still have about 2st stone to lose...  Should I wait till I've lost the rest of the weight before I contact the hospital and ask if they will give me another sleep study..  Does anybody know how common it is for to lose weight and no longer have to use the CPAP machine?  Am I just kidding myself?:-(

Any advice would be appreciate

Thanks

Helen

If you have still two stone to loose you may still be suffering, though to a much lesser extent.

I would keep it going until you are a lot closer to your target weight.  Don't be disheartened though, you have done very well loosing all that weight.  Easy way to fine out if you still need it is to either have a sleep with someone keeping an eye on you or miss a night or two (But this is not advised) and see if any symptoms appear.

Seriously though, keep going until you are closer to your target weight, when you are 1 stone away ask for another study then, by the time you get it you should be almost at your target weight.  Hope you manage to keep the weight off, I find this far harder than loosing it.

5 Stone!  Well done you :-)

Wow! Well done Helen - that's awesome!  I would definitely look at getting a repeat study as even if you haven't been cured, if you're on fixed pressure you might need a pressure change, and also a new mask as you've probably lost weight off your face.  It's difficult to know whether you should wait for the other 2 stone, as you might warrant at least a pressure change + mask now.  There's a small percentage of people who do get cured, if the sleep apnoea is caused only by weight, but for most people the untreated sleep apnoea is the cause of the weight gain.  Check out this article I wrote about this and you'll also see a small survey showing 1% of people were cured.  The weight loss will help your overall physical and emotional health though, so it's a great achievement :) http://www.sleepapnoeablog.com/obesity-weight-problems/

Yes, I did mean to say that if you are on a CPAP and not an APAP you might need the pressure lowered a bit.
