Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Sleep Week (commencing 29th October) on ITV's 'Daybreak'

Set your record buttons if you're not an early bird, as this week on ITV's 'Daybreak' Dr Hilary is speaking featuring Sleep.  On Tuesday's programme our own Helen Potts will be appearing - she is one brave lady, but is so anxious to spread the word to help others now that her own life has been turned around since being diagnosed.  The programmes are as follows, but the producer did say that the 2nd slot could be slightly later, depending on each day's other news:-

MONDAY 29TH OCTOBER

0650 -  SLEEP & OBESITY - Can sleeping better help you lose weight?

We look at the study from Birmingham University which says it does. Speak to the researcher behind the study - Dr Teresa Arora, and talk to the woman who lost 9kg in 28 days following the study advice.

0720 - YOUR PROBLEMS (GENERAL) - The public tell us their problems from the Daybreak bed, fronted by Dr Hilary.

TUESDAY 30TH OCTOBER

0650 - SLEEP APNOEA - the potentially fatal condition that robs people of their sleep and energy. Sufferers suffer from apnoea events or moments when they stop breathing, brought on in most cases by a collapsed windpipe. It affects men and women, and if undiagnosed can lead to increased blood pressure, heart attack and diabetes. We speak to mum of two and sufferer Helen Potts, whose life has been transformed by the use of a CPAP machine (constant positive airway pressure).

0720 - TEENAGERS & SLEEP - Should schools start later to accommodate teenage sleep patterns? We visit Hugh Christie Technology College in Tonbridge which starts the day at 11am for sixth-formers. Its increased attendance from 75% to 98%, and improved exam results. It also allows teenagers to work a longer work day, finishing at 5pm, which they prefer.

WEDNESDAY 31ST OCTOBER

0650 - MYTHS, MEDICINES AND OLD WIVES TALES - Do they stack up?

From over the counter medicines and remedies, to old wives tales and advice from your parents. Dr Hilary gives his view.

0720 - WAKING UP - Should you snooze and wake gently, or wake up when your alarm goes off? What's better for your wellbeing?

THURSDAY 1ST NOVEMBER

0650 -  KIDS & SLEEP - How to get children to sleep better? With so many modern distractions, gadgets and gizmos, how do you get children to adopt a strict sleep regime? We visit Winton Primary School in Bournemouth which was so worried about tired children arriving to school each morning, they enlisted the help of sleep scientist Dr Andrew Mayer, who now holds regular sleep workshops for parents.

Sleep deprived children are more likely to learn less, be disruptive in class, and go on to have health complications in later life.

0720 - YOUR PROBLEMS: CHILDRENS SLEEP -  The public tell us their problems from the Daybreak bed. Today well look at the problems children experience during sleep.

FRIDAY 2ND OCTOBER

0650 - YOUR PROBLEMS: GETTING TO SLEEP -  The public tell us their problems from the Daybreak bed. Today well talk about the issues people have when falling asleep.

0720 - SLEEP & BEAUTY - Forget botox and fillers, the biggest beauty secret of celebrities such as J-Lo, Penelope Cruz and Mariah Carey is more sleep - up to 15 hours in Mariah's case. Cosmos beauty director and an expert dermatologist tell us why.

I for one will be recording this as it took me years to get diagnosed and only then having spoken to the right person about my problem and being pointed in the right direction or i still would be having serious problems sleeping ( or should i say not sleeping ). Only now with my cpap do i go to bed confident that i will sleep and also not be afraid that i would wake up gasping for air,( that was the most frightening thing ). The more people that are aware of this the better for themselves and also their families as i know my husband suffered greatly because of my condition. I now sleep soundly and more importantly safely.

Thanks Kath for all your help and advice, and for getting me in touch with Helen. I hope the VT is of use, and already I've had some fantastic feedback via the ITV website. Best as ever, R

My pleasure Rav  I've just watched my recorded version and you did a great job with Helen!  I didn't see the 2nd part though.  Have I fast-forwarded through it + missed it, or wasn't it able to be on today with the Hurricane Sandy having to be included today?

Ignore that last comment Rav - it was our tv that stopped recording, duh!  Am watching it on ITV Player now http://www.itv.com/itvplayer/video/?Filter=daybreak

Airsense 10 -humidifier runs dry

Hi. I'm finding the Airsense 10 the hospital gave me, the humidifier chamber runs dry. It's not even on max settings, which I'm guessing would empty it a lot quicker. Seems like a big design oversight to me. Does anyone else have this trouble? The…See More
