I am going to Cuba in January and wonder if anyone else has taken their machine abroad. Do I take it as hand luggage? Do I label it medical equipment? Do I have to have a doctors letter. Not sure if I have enough time for this though.

Lucky you. Let me know if you need a bag carrier LOL.
Definitely take your CPAP machine through as hand luggage Sally, but if you intend to use in on the flight you need to ring the airline for permission. You can also get the CPAP LUGGAGE TAGS over on the website, which makes life easier at check-in. If we were in the US the rules are that CPAP is not counted as extra hand luggage. However, it's not the official case here yet, although I personally have never had any problem, but it's best to check with the airline on this to be 100% sure. I also carry a note with me which the hospital gave me years ago just to state I need to use CPAP for medical reasons. It's best to take all precautions as I have heard some horror stories. Only last week a lady rang me to say Thomson's had said she must have a Luggage Tag and a Medical Sticker on the bag, which I've never heard of before, so I told the lady to take a photocopy of the CPAP Luggage Tag and stick in on as well, just in case. I'm sure the person she spoke to at Thomson's didn't have a clue what she was talking about though :(
Another important thing to take is an extension lead in case there's no socket near the bed (which there often isn't these days in hotels, which I discovered a few months ago when I forgot to take mine to Liverpool).

Take it as hand baggage for certain! I think you'd best regard your CPAP in the same way you regard your hair-drier in terms of makinbg a fuss about carrying it on a plane. Make a fuss and you'll get a bigger fuss back; don't make a fuss and there won't be a fuss. Some airport security contractors permit only one piece of hand baggage.
Don't forget to discover the shape of Cuban electrical sockets and make sure to have an adapter with you.
Thanks very much for bothering to give me this good advice. Sally
