Mask Leaks
Hi,
My CPAP machine is the Resmed Autosense 10. I recently started to visit the Resmed MyAir site to check the data that my machine was sending. When I wake in the night I often notice that my mask is leaking so I have to re-adjust. On checking the data I can see that my mask leaks quite often. According to their site if you leak 24l per hour then you need to adjust your mask, and I often go above that limit. Even if I get close, say 20l then I am still given a "good" score. I have used different masks, preferring a full face mask. I have an Amara View which is extremely comfortable to wear and is very kind to my nose. I recently tried a Quattro Air which is very light on my face and much easier to fit than most, but I still struggle with leaks. I can remember when I first started on therapy and I was amazed at getting such a good nights sleep and feeling much better in the morning. However, I don't feel as good anymore and I'm wondering if it is these leaks that are my problem? I have tried many different adjustments with each mask, but still no joy. I guess I must be a restless sleeper and I'm knocking the mask with my head movements. I know I'll have to go back to the hospital and ask for their help, but I thought I'd ask on here first in case anyone can offer a few pointers?

Mask leaks are a problem for most of us.
The amount MyAir says leaks depends on the type of mask you have, there is an expected leak rate due to the vents on the mask itself. This has to be expected as the machine can't tell which mask and model you have, so it can't tell how much air goes out the mask every hour due to natural ventilation. You can easily find this out be changing to another mask of the same type. Even if you have no leaks all night, it will still show a leak rate. If manufactures published their expected leak rate for each mask, you could then tell how much is an actual leak. What makes things worse is that ResMed changed the software on their site, so if you didn't notice this announcement, you would think you have more leaks than you had before.
ResMed said most users will notice their numbers will be a bit higher than before and not to panic if they appear to be a bit higher. What is more important is how low your numbers are on the machine for AHI etc.
The Airsense10 has a green smiley face and a red angry face if it thinks you have a bad leak, however, I have found it is not always right.
Also, make sure your machine is set for the right size of hose, slimline or normal, also check it is set for the type of mask you are using i.e. Nasal Pillows, Nasal Mask or Full-faced as this affects the readings.
Other than that, don't be tempted to tighten the mask to tight as not only will it hurt, it will not seal as well either. The seal on most of then is designed so the the air pressure inside the mask pushed the seal out against your skin to form a seal. If the mask is to tight it can't do this and will leak even more. Full-faced masks and Nasal Masks are a bit more difficult if you move around a lot during the night as they are easier to knock when you turn sideways and the mask gets knocked by bedding, pillows etc. This can be a bit of a nuisance, but you just have to find ways around this.

Hi David, i'm also on the Airsense' 10Elite bout 3 week's and i do feel better being on it, I'm on the Full face Mask Airfit F20,
My data for mask off is nil but i must say it is a comfortable for what iv'e been through with Nasal Mask's i don't know if you have tried this one but it's worth a mention, hope you get sorted at Hospital soon, take care, Bob

I am also on the airsense 10 plus airfit 20. I agree that it is difficult to consistently get a good seal, I have a short beard which doesn't help. Ii downloaded the airfit 20 user manual and this says to fit the mask fairly loosely and then turn on machine which gives the seal time to inflate then tighten evenly until you have no leaks. This resulted in quite bad leakage figures for last night but I'll try again tonight. After using for a week my ahi dropped from 38.5 to less than 1. I have written to the dvla asking for the correct form and have stopped driving until i hear from them. My local hospital is not really up to speed with this treatment so i suppose i will have to ring up to get a treatment review, all very time consuming,

38 down to 1 is excellent, if you use the machine for more than 5 hours you should have no problem at all with DVLA.
They will contact your Sleep Doctor, so he will need your data card if they know how to read it. If they are new to this treatment, they may just look at what is on your machine, so take it with you as well as your card.

To resmed electronically who can then pass it on to the doctor, I could always take my smartphone and show him my my air results,Chris

Yeah, my machine is supposed to do this as well, but Vodaphone is not good here, so they don't get it.
Shame as my results a very good since I got the new machine.
I only have 3 AHIs and 1 central since I got the machine.
However, something went wrong last night and it said I had sever AHIs but looking at the data it must have had a recording hick-up as the total is still the same. There is also nothing on the data recorded, so I don't know what happened there.
Sometimes you can get odd events when going to sleep and waking up, but these do not or should not count.
