Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

I have not been on here for a while. I hope you are all doing well. I am having real trouble. I have been on a bi pap machine for about 12 months. I have been having trouble keeping to above 4 hours, usually around 2.5 hours.. I have only been doing around 2,5 hours a night.I didn't used to go to bed untill  around 2 am. However I have changed my sleep pattern and I go to bed around 11.30 pm. I am now doing above 5 hours a night, for the past week, but my ahi is still 39.0. I see consultant in a few weeks. Has anyone got any ideas what else I could be offered for treatment.

what is your diet like

a long shot is to try alkali foods or even bicarbonate of soda three times a day

Carolyn, if your AHI is 39 you have a problem. Either your pressures are incorrect or you are getting too many leaks. Your consultant definetly needs to look at your data.

When you go back to the hospital I would take a print-out of your AHI results so the dr is aware that you know what is going on as the AHI of 39 needs sorting, and not surprising you are tired.  Sounds like the least thing that needs doing is an adjustment to the settings on the machine.  Let us know what he says.

Hello.. Thanks for replies. I called resp nurses and they said to take my machine up to them so they could see what is going on. I must admit I have not been able to do more than three hours on my machine. However I have changed my sleep pattern, as I have not been going to bed before 2am and hubby gets up for work at 5am and I couldn't settle with it after then. Now I try to be in bed by 11.30pm and my ahi's have been lower, exept last night the mask kept unsealing, and making very rude noises, I hope hubby didn't think it was me haha.Last night ahi was 41. See what tonight brings. The resp nurses were very surprised that I could get readings from the machine, they seemed a bit snooty about it. But there you go nursey I can now see what is going on myself.

Carolyn, let us know what they say and what they recommend, as long as we have data capable machines, we can take the therapy into our own hands and some don't like that.

Are you using either Sleepyhead or ResScan software?

I only have a Autoset, so don't like giving advice on pressures for a BiPap.

Hello Terry. I am using the sleepyhead data and the nurses couldn't understand how I got it. One even said how did this man get your data ddduuurrrrrr. I said he hadn't and that I downloaded the programe myself. I'll keep you up to date on how things go.

The UK is very different to Australia in regards to software or my Sleep Specialist is anyway, I have a yearly visit and he says I don't know why you bother coming to see me, you know as much about sleep apnea as I do and you know how to read your data as much as I do. I say I like coming and talking to you and learning new things about sleep apnea, but I don't like parting with the $150 for the visit lol.

"Just to tidy this up, I finally had an in-person review by my sleep clinic yesterday, who agreed the ResMed AirSense 10 was "wheezy" and replaced the machine."

1st time and I’ve failed the mask leak test

Hi everyone, today I received my rental kit - prisma smart max, plus a Philips dreamwear mask which I’ve been wearing unconnected to try and get used to it. I just did a mask fit test using a medium mask and got a constant red/orange leak warning…See More

"Nope, I just accept that some people's throats tend to close when they sleep, due to a loss of muscle tone during deeper sleep.  Back when I was diagnosed, the sleep lab just filmed you whilst you slept, stuck an O2 meter on your finger,…"
