Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Well, I've been carefully monitoring my AHI lately, and I've noticed a pattern when my AHI was lower.... when I have my treat of strawberries, BANANA and yoghurt on an evening.  This got me thinking, so off I went searching the internet, and here's what I found.  Interesting.........

"Bananas have a lot of great health benefits. They are excellent natural energy boosters, a rich source of potassium and good for people with high blood pressure. The list of benefits could go on. But bananas for sleep apnoea? Now that’s something most people don’t know!
A study done in the University of New South Wales in New England revealed that bananas can help overcome obstructive sleep apnoea. It is found that phospholipids or fatty acids in bananas can remain active in the mouth for up to six hours. The phospholipids help keep the airways open to maintain unobstructed breathing. Therefore it is especially helpful for people with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea.
Experts also found that a steady supply of potassium in our body helps maintain a good quality sleep. Bananas are known to be super rich in potassium. One of the researchers, Dr. Tom van der Touw said :

“Our initial findings indicate that the banana can offer alternatives that are relatively inexpensive and delicious as part of treatment for patients with obstructive sleep apnoea.”

Bananas are a rich source of Vitamins A, B and C, Calcium, Iron, Potassium and Protein. So make eating a banana a nightly habit to enjoy the full benefits of a good quality sleep. Go bananas!"

Great point there Kath, most folks diets leave a lot to be desired! (mine included) - will try and boost my levels.

Oh I love bananas but I have to go easy on fibre and fruit and veg cause of the ibs (irritable bowel syndrome) - hospital actually told me not to eat fruit and veg at all ... ooooo could not cope ....

I read some years ago that regular medication lowers potassium levels in your body so to eat bananas regular if so and the skins are good for clematis if you bury them at the roots :) always nag brother in law to eat them too because he has to take so many tablets.

If you don't like or cannot eat bananas, here's a quicky link to other ideas rich in potassium and their levels

Jackie xx (who is already bananas, but not the fruit lol)

Arghhhhhh! I thought maybe Rock had the answer to my disturbed sleep of late when he suggested the full moon effects OSA. Now it's bananas that aid good sleep!

All I know is that the moon is waning and I ate a banana last evening and this morning my duvet was so rumpled and kicked about that the cat turned his nose up at his usual zizz on it while I shaved. I think I'll keep banana eating as a morning activity!

TF

There is always the didgeridoo TF!

LOL.  I bought one of those too, but can't even blow the thing.  Perhaps I'll have another go now my breathing's better after the op.  Don't recommend it for you TF as the cat would never forgive you ;)

What a good idea - I have always eaten bananas due to my conns syndrome, which causes potassium leeching so I used to have bouts of hypokalemia (low potassium) so bananas, tomatoes and instant coffee (decaff with splenda and skimmed UHT milk - plastic coffee) all have a significant place in my diet. I'm definitely going to try this as a dry mouth is usually why I wake up while on CPAP.
