Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Hi All

I currently live in Western Australia, having emigrated here from the UK over 12 months ago. I am a cpap user and have a nasal mask (phillips swift) and a pressure setting of 10. I was watching the news last night, and there was an article on this device:-

http://www.oventus.com.au/view-products/oventus-clearway-sleep/

Do you think this would work? I went straight onto cpap, and was never offered an oral appliance as they said it wouldn't work. This looks different in that it has an airway channel inside the frame. At the moment they don't have any clinic in W.A but I might look into it when they do. The total cost would be $1500 AU. And they offer your money back if it doesn't improve your AHI. I have been using cpap for over 4 years, and my average AHI was around 3.5 - 4.00 in the uk, now it's around 2.5 - 3.5. I am also very complaint and have above 4-6hrs daily usage, I am above 95% compliant.

Does anyone have experience with an oral device?

Thanks

Alan

Hi Alan

I haven't seen or tried that particular device, but have recently had a very bad experience of a similar one.  It was especially made for me in the hope of bringing down my high CPAP pressures, but firstly it didn't do what was hoped (according to my CPAP info it made no difference), and secondly just a week after using it I was in excruciating pain and after my own dentist xrayed me he found I have developed a dental cyst which I have to go into hospital to have removed later this month

If your hospital say it wouldn't help you then ask them why.  With mild to moderate sleep apnoea they can help if by pulling the jaw forwards it helps clear the airways.  However, many of us have several issues why we have sleep apnoea.

If you do decide to go ahead, I would strongly suggest you undergo a sleep study with the device in place, to check that it is treating you, as sometimes people assume they are working if the snoring stops, but this doesn't always mean the apnoeas have stopped.

Let us know how you get on and good luck with your decision.

I have read what limited information they provide and as far as I can see it does not pull the jaw forward, in fact they claim you do not get any jaw pain.  This would suggest that it does not pull the jaw forward.  There is no real explanation of how it works, which makes me think it is like most out there, it may not work.

Best thing to do is talk to your dentist or Clinic.

The dentist may be able to find out more, or talk to your Sleep Clinic before spending any cash.

A lot of companies pray on the unweary just to get their cash.

If it is not approved by a Clinic, don't splash the cash!
