Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

I really love my CPAP.

That probably sounds like an over reaction but having never known what feeling not tired was like until a few years ago, I am really reaping the benefit.

There are a couple of things that I haven't managed to overcome. I use a Quattro mask and occasionally suffer from sores on the back of my neck just where the strap lies. I thinks it's a problem to do with over tightening rather than a reaction to the material but wondered if anyone else gets this.

The other thing I suffer from is nostril hairs tickling the inside of my nose periodically. I've taken to plucking, having tried the Remmington gadget but wondered if anyone could suggest something else. Sorry if this sounds gross.

I'm new to CPAP (and also loving the effects) but I too am getting sores on the back of my neck.  I agree that I probably overtighten (you may see from my earlier thread that I get a lot of airleaks and am only on my first mask) but I would also say I feel that the headgear is the wrong size for me.  I'm 5foot 9, but have a very small head.  I wonder if this is also your problem?  I intend to ask for the next size down when I see the sleep nurse next week.

Hope this helps

Great to hear of your you're reaping the benefits of CPAP Will and it could be overtightening of the headgear that's causing the neck sores, but it's not easy when we're trying to eliminate leaks.  The Neck/Cheek Strap Covers normally solve this easily though - in fact a lot of men and women with short hair need them.  I've never need them myself, but do use the normal strap covers with certain masks, as my marks are more on the cheek.

The tickling sensation inside the nose is more common with men, due to them usually having more hair inside them.  If you're not using a humidifier this can help, so the hairs aren't so dry.  The other solution is the one you've mentioned about removing them.  Many others are troubled by a tickling sensation on the top of the nose - I used to get this a lot, but only occasionally now as I think we eventually get desensitised to it.  Oh the joys of CPAP, but so worth it

Some masks do have alternative smaller sized headgear Manda, so worth asking your clinic when you go.

I get a very itchy nose just after I put the mask on and machine.  It lasts up to 30 minutes which can be annoying.  Also because of eczema of the scalp, neck and face it can get painful to use the headgear but I do have a cap to attach to my Quarrta Air mask which I some times use.  I switch masks if I am getting very sore.

Dee

Is it this kind of cap you use Dee?  These ones are called SoftCaps and I use one myself with the FitLife mask, as it's far more comfortable

Yes to softcap but its not usable anymore.  When I see them on 23 April I'll ask for another one.  I fund even the small one is slightly to big as I have to fiddle with it fit better.  I might see if I can make the cap shorter in length as that is where to long.

I'm in a lot of pain at the moment I think that I over did it on the computer and standing up for way to long.  Last night it was so painful that I couldnt find a position that was comfy to sleep in so it wasn't a great night in all.  Hopefully it will ease as the day goes on so that I can get a good night.

Dee

The sizing of the softcaps can be a problem Dee.  I use one myself and initially bought the wrong size.  Take a look on our website to help you with the sizing, so you know which one to ask for (it's the same sizing for both the lycra + mesh ones) http://www.hope2sleep.co.uk/products/70
