Settings and different masks / colds etc.
For the most time my machine (Icon Auto) is set for 8 min 18 max and seldom rises above 10, when using a sleepweaver mask (nasal). Generally the machine reports an AHI under 1, 90% pressure of 9
When I have severe congestion (such as at the moment with a heavy cold) I find a full face mask (Quatro FX) more comfortable to get to sleep with, but my AHI and 90% pressures are significantly higher, AHI last two nights being 4.3 and 3.2 (not end of world) and 90% pressures 15.5 and 12.0
So does anyone more experienced want to speculate - is this because of (a) the mask, (b) the congestion or (c) my chosen cold remedy (night nurse tablets)?
I suppose I should do a trial - using the Quattro FX when I don't have a cold?
I suppose I'm fortunate to be using an auto as well!

I would guess it's the congestion causing the raised AHI's - there's likely to be more hypopnoeas with a stuffy nose. If the Night Nurse has drowsy-effecting ingredients in that would contribute to a raised AHI too.
It would certainly be worth you comparing the full face mask when you haven't got a cold.
You're lucky you get good results with the Sleepweaver as I hear more negatives reports on this one. Perhaps it's because your average pressure isn't too high at 10.

Oddly I find the sleepweaver seals better in the 8-12 range, above that it leaks slightly, below that it leaks a lot. I just replaced it and that's shown me an interesting sleepweaver fact, the material isn't very soft when new and needs a couple of handwashes to make it work better.
My year old and starting to look worn one worked better than the new one out of the packet.

Thanks for that interesting observation, which will no doubt help others. I've not tried it myself as they still don't have a full face version, but my minimum pressure's 12 so doesn't sound too promising for me.

Symmit, good question, I don't know the answer but suggest it is probably a mixture of everything. You sound like me wanting to know why AHI's go up and down, sometimes consistent and othertimes all over the place. I am still searching for the answers but in the meantime are not worrying as much as long as I feel OK and my AHI's are much lower than my diagnosised figure.

Hi Terry - you know why your AHI goes up - you have a cold/congestion and take Night Nurse. That leaves nothing left to investigate! Your machine responds to the changed conditions in the only way it knows how. I don't believe we want a machine that blasts our noses/sinuses clear asit would have to finish up in our lungs!!
The fact that your AHI stays under 5 suggests toi me that you are merely suffering with a woman cold. Thank goodness you don't have man flu!
