Well, it's my turn to be in shock. I was so sure your system and aftercare would be so much better across the pond. Sleep isn't taught in our nursing training here either, as my daughter's just completed her degree and they never even touched upon it :(

Nope no shock here. Our system is not much different from what I am hearing. Most people do not see a sleep doc in the U.S. Post-study problems are handled by the Primary Care Physician(PCP) or the Durable Medical Equipment(DME) provider. It is very common for a person to go a year or 2 without being seen for their sleep. The above mentioned people or companies are only involved as much as you make them be.
They still don't teach sleep in our medical or nursing schools over here.

The shock for me is an everyday thing when it comes to sleep. The technology to study sleep has been in practice for over 100 years. Sleep research has only been going on for about 60 years. This research was seriously hindered by the works of Freud. The sleep undustry did not begin to get noticed until about 15-20 years ago. Unfortunately several people have had to die within the last 10 years for sleep to be taken seriously. All of these deaths were post-surgery and landed the hospitals/doctors in court. Now most hospitals have a screening program called "Stop Bang". This program ensures that almost everyone admitted to a hospital get screened for apnea. This program was started by a group of docs including one of my own and is now almost nationwide.
Due to the above here in the colonies we are really good at identifying those at risk for sleep disorders. We have more sleep clinics and docs then anywhere else in the world. The problems lies in the FACT that sleep has become a cash cow. There is no money in the follow up.
Wow.....how sensible that "Stop Bang" system is. Wonder how many people will have to die over here before it's normal practice testing people before having anaesthetics.
