Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Have not managed ONE whole night with the CPAP for days due to this cough and cold. Unfortunately it's made worse by the dryness. I am picking up a humidifyer on Tuesday which might help things but I will be SO glad to see the back of this virus. I have all the remedies and Vicks vapour stuff but can't get past two hours a night at the moment. I am trying to have a couple of hours during the day with it on to top up as it were and this definitely helps. Am hoping once it goes that I'll be able to do full nights with it.
Is this always a problem with colds etc. I spoke to my GP and obviously as it's a virus there is no point in antibiotics. My chest is clear apart from echoed sound  coming from my throat.

Gah! Colds, I utterly HATE them and that dreadful viral fatigue.

It's a shame you're having to deal with this virus right at the beginning of your new CPAP treatment.  Let's hope you're over the worst of it now.  It's difficult dealing with a cold on CPAP even for an experienced user, so you're doing great!  Am not sure what mask you're using, but if it's a nasal one then that's even worse.  It's a pity everyone doesn't get given a full face mask as well for the times when they have colds or allergies etc.  The good news is that most people find that once they're into their CPAP treatment and their sleep debt is paid back, then they don't get half as many colds as they used to due to their immune system working better.

I am fortunate that they gave me a full face mask. Considering leaving it off tonight tbh and starting again when the cold goes or once the humidifer is here. The annoying thing is that the mask is not uncomfortable and if I didn't have this cold I think I'd be well into it by now. Read up "chest infection" on NHS Choices, it's definitely what I have and will go in 7-10 days.
Acute Bronchitis is the technical term andI am not even a smoker (nor have I ever been). Still it's allowing me to have a legitimate moan and whine which is always stress busting lol.

This is a good place for us all to have a good moan :D  However, try your very best to use the mask tonight, as it's even more important when you already have congestion.  Not easy I know, but keep thinking "nothing lasts forever" and hopefully the nasty virus will get better.  I swear by high doses of Vitamin C capsules at times like this, and I'm sure other people use different things.

I will persevere tonight, am taking huge amounts of Vitamin C and the cold and cough Lemsip stuff.
My poor son is finding me no fun but I will snuggle up with him tonight and watch a film.

Woohoo! Slept nearly all night with CPAP, only woke twice but managed to go back to sleep both times easily - and the chest feels a good deal more comfy this morning too.

This is fabulous news Amanda.  Sounds like you've turned the corner now, and things are going to get better and better for you now :)

Pressure waking me up. Belching and wind
