Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

does anyone use the total face mask? emil has got this respironics fitlife total face mask, i have put a pic on, its great he is so calm no sores anywhere no breaking down of skin nothing my only question if anyone can help is, he is a bit symptomatic since using it, i have tried getting hold of his home ventilation nurse but hes not getting bk to me, and his consultant is on holiday, in my home town the nurses dont kno anything about the whole thing, since having it he has been snoring and snorting and got a bit of a tracheal tug back, doeas anyone know if it alters the way the pressure is if u get what i mean? cos its a larger area instead of a small mask does it change the force at what the ressure goes in? that might not make sense i kno what i mean im not sure if i am putting it correctly tho!

My experience with this mask is very limited. Is his pressure fixed or is it on auto. Full face masks typically require more pressure than nasal.
Its fixed, the home vent nurse or resp changes it as required after overnight trace or symptoms appearing.

Rachel, I use the Fit Life mask - it's my favourite :)  I did once raise the query about if the pressure needs raising with it being a much bigger area, but I was told it didn't.  It's a great mask for no face marks, and I'm sure this is even more important with young delicate skin.

Looking at the picture you've posted, the mask does look rather large on such a small face and I was wondering if you're sure there's no leaks happening.  Also, just check the exhalation ports are both covered with the little plastic stoppers, as mine's come out a few times so this would affect the pressure.

Do you have the software for the machine to see what's going on?

its the smallest one they do, they arent supposed to be for children but the childrens hospital break every rule in every book to get the best for the kids!

theres no leaks as his machine alarms if there is. his home vent nurse came last night and turned his pressure up just 1 point, but, unfortunatly he didnt sleep well as hes been poorly last night.

ive looked thru the menu on his machine and it isnt recording anything apart from how many hours hes used the machine!

Great to hear you got help from your home vent nurse, which must have made you feel better.  However, sorry to hear Emil had a bad night.  Hope it will be better tonight :)  Yes, there are just the 2 sizes in the Fit Life - small + large, however, as the manufacturers are realizing more and more children need masks there'll hopefully be more choice of sizes soon.

It's a shame there's no facility for recording more on the machine.  Most people (myself included) have to buy the software-capable machines.  A good example of the available software is on Respironics advert at the top of this page if you have a look.  I love (and think it's important) the fact that I can see what happens in my sleep.  If I'm feeling particularly exhausted it often ties in with my AHI from the night before, but if I'm not feeling so good and my AHI was good, then I know there's another reason for the way I'm feeling.

Just had a look Rachel, and WOW, not seen those 'cool' ones for the kids.  I love the way they're disguising them.  Perhaps they'll make them in the shape of a flower eventually for us ladies for our bedside cabinets :)  It says you can get the memory cards for checking the data on the machine.  Good that you've got the SATS alarm though as that's a good indication.

LOL, although I still don't hear alarm clocks!  The next one I get I hope will have a coffee maker and toaster built in.  At the moment I'll stick with my Respironics, which I'm pleased to say doesn't make high pitched noises LOL.  The software for these are great - so detailed.  I think eventually they'll make CPAPs with built-in oximeters, which will be a good thing.

Sorry.... don't know how I missed the videos.  However, the difference is amazing.  Brilliant!  Seems like you're being looked after real well, which is not always the case.  I wish you and Emil all the best, and really hope he grows out of this, even if just for a few years as he grows older.  So often children do get a break after surgery and help, even though OSA comes back to haunt them in the future.  Awareness is the golden key!
