Hi everyone, I'm having problems with apnoea occurring in the morning. I generally fall asleep in the evening without any problems but am constantly waking up anywhere between 1:30 to 4:30 and then having apnoea so that I can't get any more sleep. I'm currently using an Airsense 10 CPAP machine. I've increased the pressure slightly but this has had limited success. I've had this machine for two and a half years without any problems whatsoever so am very frustrated that this is occurring now. I have wondered if there is a fault with the machine but it seems there's a severe UK shortage of CPAP machines so I haven't got any hope of getting a replacement. Any thoughts on the above would be much appreciated thanks.

Sorry to hear this Patrick. You need to give your clinic a call who can hopefully monitor you remotely to see what's happening. If you're on a fixed pressure and having to take any sedating meds or have put weight on this could cause apnoeas to wake you when you slip into REM or if an auto pressures the hospital may want to adjust the minimum, but they'll be able to see what's happening at their end.
Hi Kath, thanks for the reply. I have put on a little bit of weight but that's over the last couple of years so I've been reasonably constant over the last year or so. As it happens I've got a sleep clinic technician calling me this afternoon but I'm not hopeful that she'll be able to help much. Sleep apnoea can be a very difficult thing to cope with. My main worry is the long term damage I might be doing to my already severely overloaded brain. Thanks for the reply and taking the time to help.
Ah that's good you're getting a call and as I say, hopefully the technician can see from their end what's happening. It only takes a few nights of bad therapy or interrupted sleep to affect how we feel during the day so fingers crossed for a quick solution. Let us know how your appointment goes.

Hi Kath, had the chat with the technician and the conclusion is that my CPAP machine is working fine and the sleep apnoea results are very good. I did a Google search for jerking awake when trying to go to sleep and according to the results I might have Hypnic Jerks. Looking at the described symptoms online they are exactly the same as mine. All a bit worrying as excessive Hypnic Jerks is untreatable. Everyone has Hypnic Jerks to a small extent which isn't a problem but when it becomes more severe and chronic then it can be a problem. I'm going to call my sleep clinic tomorrow to see if they can help. All very worrying. Pat
Sorry Patrick as I missed your reply but good to hear all well with your CPAP. One of the biggest causes of hypnic jerks is sleep depravation so if you're not getting a good 7-9 hours of sleep on CPAP that would be the first thing to try. Anxiety can also cause it and just occasionally it can be misinterpreted as restless legs, so if you think that's the case getting your iron levels checked is recommended.
