Cpap excessive dry mouth and taking it off after 4 hrs without knowing or remembering

Hi

My hubby is a CPAP user he is finding his mouth in the morning is excessively dry (tongue stuck on roof of mouth dry) and he is averaging 4 hours use as he removes his mask without being aware

Any tips on how to stop both of these issues

Thanks

Carol

Has he got a humidifier Carol as that should cure most of his dry mouth?  Is he on a nasal or full face mask?  If he's using nasal and opening his mouth that would also cause a dry mouth.  Some discomfort is certainly going on for whatever reason, causing him to remove his mask without realising.  You need to get to the bottom of this, obviously, as he's not getting his proper treatment.

Does sound to me like nasal mask and mouth breathing, that's enough to wake anyone up! Full face mask or chin strap may help, if he's using a full face mask already then turn up the humidity (get a humidifier from your clinic / provider if you've not already got one)

Hi there

Thanks for the replys no his cpap machine doesnt have a humidifier its a resmed he also uses the resmed facial mask it covers his nose and mouth ..... he has been using cpap for 15months and had one follow up appointment does that sound right ?

He definitely needs a humidifier and if you ring the clinic they should provide one for him.  99% of patients with full face masks need humidification - and a lot with nasal masks do too!  If he does get a humidifier I would also get a Hose Cover (this isn't meant to be sales pitch, but it's so he doesn't get 'rainout' problems).

Most of the hospitals give annual appointments after the first follow-up, but lately we've been hearing stories of clinics who've stopped this :(

thank you Kath thats helpful will get him to call them tomorrow and I didnt take it as a sales pitch I took it as helpful info thanks

He did have an appointment after he lost 2 stone to check settings but that was 6mths into treatment perhaps he can ask when he calls when hes due to be seen again

Fingers crossed he can get the humidifier without a fight

Good Luck :)

No response from sleep nurse ..... however another ?? Last night he woke sweating, headache , feeling sick and dizzy headache is still present ......could the nasal air vent on his mask have been blocked ?? Or could it just be a virus

Could be both.  First wait + see if it's a virus (the next few hours will tell), but check the vent's ok too.  Don't give up with the nurse as he needs a humidifier, although I'm sure you won't Carol LOL.

Pressure waking me up. Belching and wind

HiI'm using the prisma smart max machine. Initially I was just on a nasal mask, this changed as I was sleeping with my mouth open. I then went to face and nose mask and complained of bad wind and belching. Sometimes the pressure in the night was…See More
