After reading this months newsletter i found it interesting what you said about vaseline. I was also told by my sleep clinic that i could use it. I having a brain queried this and they said no problem ! But i decided that was bad advice and did not. I just put up with a sore nose from time to time.

Welcome to the forum David, and thanks for highlighting this. I just wonder how many clinics are advising the use of Vaseline For those who aren't on the newsletter list, I'm copying below my paragraph from this month's newsletter on it:-
WARNING:- Last week I was horrified to be told by a customer that her clinic had told her to use Vaseline, as although there was a risk in damaging the mask, he told the customer it could be replaced. Apart from what I deem as irresponsible advice in our cash-strapped NHS, please be aware that this is not the only reason for not using any creams which contain petroleum jelly. The Mayo Clinic put out a warning a while ago about the risk of inhaling products like Vaseline as it can cause an accumulation of the jelly into the lungs, leading to potentially serious inflammation such as lipoid pneumonia. Bearing in mind we have pressurised air blown into us all night, I would guess the risk would be greater. This is why we stock the CPAP/BiPAP Therapy Cream which is safe for our masks and safe for us!It goes without saying that petroleum jelly MUST NOT ever be used with oxygen therapy too, as it could make the oxygen flammable as well as blocking the oxygen port. The CPAP Therappy Cream is suitable for oxygen users, as I checked this out with the manufacturer before we started stocking it. If you are using the nasal pillows-type masks the cream can be inserted into the nostrils first, but also bear in mind that if you suffer from bad nasal dryness issues a CPAP/BiPAP Humidifier will certainly help with this. The cream helps protect the skin with the mask on, but can also be used during the day to clear up any sore areas. Our local hospital calls it the 'magic cream.'
i have a sore on the bridge of my nose and one on my right nostril,i saw a doctor [locum] and she told me to use vasline i have been using it for two weeks to no avail,so glad for this forum for telling it right.going to order some cream from cath, again thanks.muz
