NHS operations and Sleep apneoa
I was supposed to have surgery on Monday, They had changed my consultant, so to ensure he was aware of my condition, I left a letter, at my pre op screening last Friday, and requested that the information was passed to the Anaesthetist and recovery team, this seesm to have sent them into free fall, my surgery has been cancelled, and I am going to have to wait again. Does anyone else have this kind of problem, they seem to be unable to read my previous notes, and they are unable to cope with CPAP or sleep apnoea.
I am frustrated and fed up.

I'm not surprised you're frustrated and fed up Susan! There should be no problem with you having anaesthetic as long as the anaesthetist is aware of it and you use your CPAP immediately after the surgery and for anytime you may fall asleep. The other precaution the hospitals normally take is to have us put onto the High Observation Unit for more careful monitoring.
The first time I had surgery, I knew all this myself, but when I requested my CPAP straight after the op, I was told several times by different medics that CPAP wasn't necessary as I was on oxygen. It took a lot of persuading for them to understand that oxygen would not keep my airways open. I even demonstrated to them how oxygen can also be fed through the 02 port on our masks. The following year when I was admitted onto the same ward for my next nasal surgery, the staff were far more on the ball.

The problem is this is the third time, I have had treatment at this hospital, they seem to be unwilling to learn or improve so I have no faith that they will take care of me post operatively, I am considereing asking to be refered to an alternative hospital, the one where my Sleep apneoa consultant is, it is a little further away, but hopefully the communication would be better and staff might at least be aware of the issues.

Things will improve eventually Susan, but for now just make sure that YOU are in control for any surgery you have. I had to do this myself as I posted above. It all depends on which dept we are in during our hospital stays and some are more clued-up than others. I was disappointed that my dept was ENT, who I would have expected to be more on the ball!

hi all you hoseheads,i have just had an opp on my inside nose to widen the channels and they wouldnt put me to sleep because of my s/a i had to be awake and it realy hurt dont want it again ever,although the opp has been very sucessfull it aparently only lasts about 12 months so dont know whether i could go through it again.keeping my fingers crossed i dont have too.regards.muz

Argh.... I had surgery on my nose too Martin, and no way would I want that whilst awake. You're very brave + hope the results last so it doesn't need re-doing.

hi all,i have been back to the hospital this morning,and apparently i have had a new surgery opperation,they have been doing this opp in norway for 14 years but its on trial here.(so i was a test case)it has been succesful apart from fluid in my middle ear with douching my nose out with water,bi carb of soda and sugar solution.its clearing now but its been 3 months since surgery.they have cut 3mm off the inside of both nostrils and it should last 4 to 5 years,(fingers crossed).regards.muz
