Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

I'm grasping at straws here, but I'm wondering if using my CPAP is causing me to have a salty taste. This taste thing only started about six months ago and I've been using my CPAP for about five years.  My GP has done numerous blood tests to try and find out what's causing it, but to no avail, and she's run out of ideas so I thought I'd try here.  It's driving me mad!

Oh that sounds horrible Tricia.  I've not heard of it caused by CPAP and the only thing I could think of which could be related is if you're careful what water you're using if you have a humidifier (only distilled, tap water if pre-boiled then cooled, filtered or bottled water - NOT deionised!).  I've heard of a salty taste happening when people are dehydrated.  Hope you find the cause soon.

It is horrible, Kath!  I don't use a humidifier, but you've made me wonder if I need one and that's what's causing the taste?  Could it be possible do you think?

Yes I bet it is I just did a quick internet search and it seems there are a few issues that would be worth speaking with your dentist and/or ENT http://www.oasisdiscussions.ca/2014/02/11/st-2/  It also mentions acid reflux which a lot of sleep apnoea sufferers have.  I would definitely ask for a humidifier because if it's linked to sinuses then humidification could help.  Also make sure your filters are up to date on your CPAP machine.  Keep me posted how things go.

Sorry for the late reply, Kath.  I've been having problems with my laptop and have only just see your last reply.

I saw my GP again and she's asked their Pharmacist to check my meds (I have Fibromyalgia so I'm on a lot!).  Unfortunately, he's been on holiday and starts back tomorrow so I don't know when he'll get around to my meds, and we go on holiday on Sunday for three weeks.

I checked with Dr. Google, too, but didn't come across the Oasis page which you found.  I'm going to print it out and let my GP see it.  Thanks!

"Just to tidy this up, I finally had an in-person review by my sleep clinic yesterday, who agreed the ResMed AirSense 10 was "wheezy" and replaced the machine."

1st time and I’ve failed the mask leak test

Hi everyone, today I received my rental kit - prisma smart max, plus a Philips dreamwear mask which I’ve been wearing unconnected to try and get used to it. I just did a mask fit test using a medium mask and got a constant red/orange leak warning…See More

"Nope, I just accept that some people's throats tend to close when they sleep, due to a loss of muscle tone during deeper sleep.  Back when I was diagnosed, the sleep lab just filmed you whilst you slept, stuck an O2 meter on your finger,…"
