Hi
My elderly dad was fitted with a pace maker and the surgeon asked him if he would be prepaid to take part in a study re the use of a pace maker to help manage Sleep Apnoea. my dad doesn't have a diagnoses of OSA but I do so he agreed as it may help me in the future.
has anyone else come across this?? and have any info?

Hi Andy. I'm not quite understanding how a pacemaker itself would actually help with sleep apnoea, and also how your Dad's agreement in being part of the trial would assist, if he doesn't actually have sleep apnoea himself. I'm sure that for someone with sleep apnoea who has a pacemaker, then the pacemaker itself would help protect the heart against the apnoeas, but I know lots of people with pacemakers due to heart problems who also have to use CPAP. Am I missing something?
Also, out of interest, has your Dad actually had a sleep study to check if he has sleep apnoea? I say this because sleep apnoea does run in families and bearing in mind your Dad needs a pacemaker, this could be a sign he has sleep apnoea. There's an article here stating how people needing pacemakers should be checked for sleep apnoea http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/sleep-apnea/news/20070312/slee...
