Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Hi Everyone, recently diagnosed that I stopped breathing during the night, a little background info, I m 56 and 2 stone overweight, have always been an early bird since a child, I tend to wake at 5.30 make a cuppa and read till I get up at 6.15am, always full of energy , after a bout of flue before Xmas 2016, felt tired early evening only falling a sleep quickly on the settee an d going to bed, so missed my previous settle down read at night. Went to doctor and two weeks ago started in the Resmed Worsened 10. Struggling to keep the mask on all night  at the moment but if I don't worried DVLA will withdraw my licence, devasted if l loose that l loose everything , job home. Reading different threads in here there is so much talk about pressure????????. The hospital just gave me the machine already set at 4. No option of mask. Do I have to eventually buy the machine from them?. Due back on Friday to see them, armed with questions. Any advice what else I should ask them would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance ☺

Sorry for the delay over Easter Dinah and just goes to prove how different we all are, as I've never been an early bird in my whole life, even now I'm on therapy....I'm definitely a confirmed 'night owl.'  We find some people are like you and have no issue getting up in a morning, but struggle in the evening, then there are people like me who struggle to wake but come to life as the day goes on!

You do need to comply with your CPAP therapy and then there should be no issue with the DVLA.  The sleep clinic will confirm to them you're on good therapy (when you are).  You're obviously on a CPAP trial just now, but once you go back to the clinic they will check your compliance and see how you're doing, then if all is ok they will send you home again either with the machine you have or they will swap you to a different one.  You don't have to buy your own here in the UK.  The pressure of 4 they've set you on will just be the minimum, but as you sleep and have apnoeas the pressures will be rising to treat the events.  The hospital will be looking at this data too when you go back.

Definitely write down a list of questions you have and discuss any mask issues.  The clinic will have given you the type you need if you're either a mouth breather or nose breather during sleep.  Have a look on the main website if you're having problems with comfort/compliancy as there are lots of tips on there http://www.hope2sleep.co.uk/tips-for-problems-sleeping-with-cpap-or...

Hi Kath, thanks for getting back to me, your site has been a godsend,I'm constantly reading discussion

You're very welcome Dinah and let us know how your appointment goes or if you have any problems you need help with before then.

Hi Dinah, I cannot add to what Kath has said and it's thanks to the NHS that we can get CPAP machines and masks without paying extra. I might just mention that, to be on the safe side, I copied all my reports form the hospitla nd sent them to the SDV

Write down any questions you may have and make a point of asking them.

If you breath through your nose or mouth, remember to tell them if you know, it might just surprise you how many people don't know (included me) as I never thought about it.  The machine you have at the moment will be an APAP (automatic machine that will work out the pressure you need if it is Sleep Apnoea you have.  The mask you have at the moment will just be that, a mask that is a near fit.  When you get your machine, ask what mask choices they have, take your time trying them if you can,  The mask is the area where most people have problems.  Good luck on the start of a new friendship with your new found mechanical pal.

It is not easy at the start for some, so if you have problems just ask.
