As per the title really.
Sleepyhead and my resmed machine's precis. screen tell me that my AHI has been at or below 1.00 each night for several weeks. I've also been able to sleep through the night with few, if any periods of wakefulness. On occasion, I've felt that I've not woken up at all.
However, recently during the day, I'm as tired as I've ever been. Come 4pm and I'm struggling to stay awake and have to have a nap.
These days of extreme tiredness are the exceptions. But, every day I'm yawning and feeling lethargic from just after I've gotten up. It's just as if I'm not using my machine.
I have no idea what's going on. Does it take time for the tiredness to dissipate? Or am I expecting too much from the treatment?
I'm really confused.

Thanks Terry. I'm only one month into my treatment. I was diagnosed as 'moderate'. Being 52, I've obviously lived with it unknowingly for a long while.
To be totally honest, even though all of the numbers seem to be excellent, I feel exactly as I did before started treatment. I'm sure that I sleep better. My partner confirms this. But, sitting here right now, I've got that same fuzzy headed feel that I took for normal for all of those years previously.
I feel reassured to hear that in your experience it can take quite a while for really noticeable improvements to become clear. After all, the odds are that I'm to use my machine for the rest of my days. So, I've got time.
Lots of things other than OSA affect our sleep - stress, diet, alcohol, late night eating esp. wrong foods, diabetes, lack of exercise, ...........
If you are getting good numbers and tiredness persists, I'd say time for a trip to your GP and/or sleep clinic. I reckon a month is time enough to have made good any 'sleep deficit' you were carrying - but maybe not.
Thanks, Tigers Fan. I'm visiting my clinic next week to pick up the equipment for my compliance re-test. I shall mention this to them.
It would be worthwhile getting your GP to take some blood tests to rule out any other problems. An annual check for thyroid and diabetes is recommended for people with sleep apnoea.
Thanks Terry. I meant that I'm 52 years old. :-)
During my initial test, my AHI was 18. I was told that I have moderate apnea. One thing this has taught me is that I need to see my medical notes.
Thanks for your encouragement, Terry and Happy Anniversary!
The awake feeling that are beneficial from PAP therapy are related to the amount of sleep debt you have aquired over your life. If you had untreated sleep apnea for more than 10 yrs it could take 3 to 6 months for you to truly feel these benefits. Try sleeping an extra half hour a day to speed up the process.
Thanks for that. Hopefully, as the weeks and months pass, I'll see the benefit. I now know it will take time. That is comforting as I thought I was doing something wrong.
So much to learn. Lot's of time to learn it.
:-)
