Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

It would be interesting to know who uses CPAP or APAP.  For those who aren't sure, CPAP is set at one level of constant pressure (after ramping) and APAP is automatic pressure, which is set low and raises when the machine senses an apnoea is about to happen.  Most people I speak to love APAP, but there are some who prefer CPAP.

Normally the hospital/sleep clinic tells people what pressure they're setting the machine at, but most CPAPs show the pressure in the display (assuming there is one).  If you can't see it, let us know which machine you have Diane so we can help you.
i dont know wot all the numbers mean, but i was told at hossy that my pressure is 14 highest, and im at my best at number 12...so after all iv said, they want to give me same Cpap pressure of 12 all the time,c if im more awake on that,if not i will be put back on Auto!! its worth a try because im still very very tired during the day!! i also got another mask full face, but i prefere my full face mask with nasal pillows!! so looks like i might be goin from Apap to Cpap, well trying it anyway ,c if it makes a difference,iv done 35 days of treatment.lol..so still at experimenting stage, seeing wots best for me!!  paula x x

My hospital wanted my cpap reading to be just above the highest reading I had on auto. I seem to remember my highest on the loaned apap as being 11.8 so they were happy for my highest pressure on cpap to remain at 12 as it would catch the highest reading.

The apap on auto works better for me but different people find different things better it seems. Some poeple are much better with cpap. I also hate the nasal pillows because they dig into my nostrils and hurt! My full face mask with no nasal pillows just leaks! I bought a nasal pillows mask with nothing else so vision was good for reading or watching tele from bed but that also hurt! We just have to keep trying everything we can. I'm best with simply designed nasal masks.

At 35 days you are still discovering the way. I wish you well with the treatment. The benefits are fantastic for those who persist! Best wishes to you and may your sleep get better and better! Rosemary

Did the hospital tell you if you were still having apnoeas, and if so, how many?  It's still such early days for you Paula regarding still being tired, as people often take a good while to feel the best benefit due to having to repay their bodies from all the years of sleep debt.  It will be interesting to see how you go on CPAP after APAP......

Hi Brenda.  Have a look here http://www.asiliveandbreathe.co.uk/ for scoliosis help.  The lady who owns the website is called Marion and she's a great source of help and support to people with scoliosis.  There's also a link there to her Facebook page where people talk to each other.

My Andrew started off on CPAP pressure of 10, we never got him to adjust so the doctor put him on APAP and he sleeps 10 to 11 hours every night. APAP was the best thing that could have happens to him and me.
Great to hear this Katie :)

Wow, that's amazing to hear you're having NONE!  Whilst I still think it can take longer for your body to be paid back it's full sleep debt, it does seem strange you aren't feeling any benefits.  You're certainly doing all you can to help yourself (like not drinking or smoking like you put on another post) and now going to Slimming World, so will be interesting seeing how the diet goes.  If you're still feeling tired, then perhaps a trip to the GP should be next to check for other 'conditons' that cause tiredness, like underactive thyroid (which has a link with OSA) along with diabetes etc.  Let us know how it's going.

That's good news then, so it seems like the diet/exercise are your next route to take.  Most people still have apnoeas/hypopnoeas whilst still on their CPAP treatment, but the numbers are a lot lower, and should ideally be below 5.  Good idea of yours to wait until Monday ;)
