Apnoea worse with C pap machine
I Have severe sleep apnoea also central apnoea (lucky me!)
When I use the Respironics c pap machine I wake up in a worse condition than when I don't use it. The machine is set at the highest setting by the consultant but never-the-less it doesn't cause me any problem sleeping but as I said I wake up feeling so tired I can fall straight back to sleep.

Adaptive Servo Ventilation machines: essentially operates as would a bilevel machine, but with the added ability to adjust IPAP (inhalation pressure) upward very rapidly (within one breath) if the sleeper looks like they won't reach the target volume or flow that the machine has been tracking.

Hi Russell and welcome to our Forum. Were you diagnosed with central sleep apnoea at your original sleep study? I say this, because some people develop it on treatment with too high a pressure. Are you on CPAP or APAP (a fixed pressure or automatic)?
The correct term for both is either Complex Sleep Apnoea or Mixed Sleep Apnoea, and so often people with this don't respond well to CPAP, and it can even make it worse. The two better options are BiPap or ASV (like 99 says). Also some people need supplementary oxygen.
Take a look at this article from the well respected Columbus Sleep Disorders Centre which will back up what I'm saying, as please bear in mind I am not a trained medic.

Russell, welcome, have you discussed it with your sleep specialist and 99 and Kath are correct from the information you have given us. It sounds like they are treating the obstructive or severe SA but not the centrals that's why you are still feeling tired. Hopefully if they do decide to get you on a AVS it will treat both, keep us updated.

Thanks so much for your helpfull replies. I am going back to the clinic 29th May and I will discuss what you've told me with the consultant. Everything you've said and I have read from the columbus centre seem right about me. If this manages to sort it out I'll love you all forever!!!

Good luck Russell, and hope your consultant agrees - the VPAP and BiPAP machines a lot more expensive than CPAP!

Hi and thanks to everyone that took the time to respond to me. I went to the sleep clinic yesterday and returned the c pap machine because it was doing me no good at all. The consultant is transfering me to the London Chest hospital because as many of you said I need either a vi or bi pap machine. It will probably be quite a few months before they see me but I'll keep you all posted when I do get seen. Thanks a lot again to everyone
