Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

I have had major belly bloating  to the point where I have had to go up in waistband  size from size 8 to 11 in my jeans which makes them baggy else-wear, and  buy loose tops to hide my gut!  I look like I am pregnant! : (

My PC Dr ruled out any serious causes via x-ray and tests and said this is not fat. When he taps on my belly he can hear that its all air. He says it's b/c of swallowed  forced c-pap air  going into into my gut. I have O2 machine coupled into my c-pap tubing as well. Has this been a problem for others too? My belly is always so distended and sometimes painful. I can't seem to expel all this air from either end either! lol! It' is not gas from food sources, as I avoid all gas causing foods, take probiotics and digest enzymes as well.

I have to wear a full mask as the nasal pillow won't work for me. Even with the chin strap I open my mouth in my sleep. I use the  ResMed Quatro FX mask.

Hi Susan.  How long have you been on CPAP?  A lot of people are troubled by this at first, but it does usually settle down.  At first I used to be doubled over with the pain, but years later, it hardly ever happens now - just very occasionally.  Have you had a look at the video about this subject on this site?  (Click on Videos at the top of this page).  It's interesting to note that this particular video has been viewed far more than any of the others, which indicates it's a common problem for a lot of people.
Susan, I was getting it very badly at first but it has started to settle down after 6 months or so.
I also use a ffm but the Mirage Quattro with chin strap.
I find that if the air wants to get in your mouth and into your stomach during the night it will.
A couple of things I have done as I'm a reformed mouth breather is try to breath through my nose during the day, when I eat, prior to going to sleep and when I wake up.
I know it sounds obvious but it seems to be helping me during the night as I am training myself to be a nose breather.
It takes time to change 49 years of habit.
I also uses Vicks Vapor Rub under my nose each night to make sure my nose isn't blocked, I sometimes use a nasal spray but personally don't like using it every night, good luck and let us know your progress.

Thanks for the tips.Funny thing is I only breath through my nose during the day as I tend to be a tension jaw clincher. I guess I have a few extra challenges to this whole thing.   I've been on an Oxygen machine and a C-pap  over night since Feb. But I wear a full set of dentures that must be removed every night too. It's weird but is very difficult to keep your mouth shut properly with no teeth in, so I think my jaw drops open easily. Because of the oxygen, I can not use Vicks or other greasy or oily products on my face, not sure why, but my O2 supplier told me not to.

I just really hate all this bloating in my gut, and hope it doesn't turn out to be just one more thing I have to live with.

I've been on an Oxygen machine and a C-pap  over night since Feb. I also have COPD and Bronchiectasis, but so far I manage my daytime hours with out having to be on the O2, unless I start exercising or getting very active and my O2 saturation drops down too much.

Have you been back for a check lately to find out how your results at with the CPAP therapy?  I was thinking that if your pressure could be decreased a little that may help, but obviously it can't if you're on the correct setting.  Also try elevating your bed head if you can - even a couple of inches may help, or one of those wedge body pillows.  Have a look on our website, www.hope2sleep.co.uk at the ARA pillow cushion, which you should be able to get easier and possibly cheaper where you are.

That's interesting Marion, as I was thinking it was just that the creams could damage the masks etc.  You learn something everyday.  Looking forward to your new book coming out!

I'll check that link out! Thanks!  I have my bed elevated at the head by 7 inches and I am using a buckwheat filled pillow ( i love them and have used them for years, due to neck  problems. And it is great for being able to sleep on my side without the pillow pushing on the face mask. You can mold the pillow any way you need to.

I am always open to new things though!

Oh yes! Now I remember he did say something about the burn risk in the event there is a fire.
