Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Hi

What is better distilled water verses tap water.  I was wondering what is best for the CPAP machine as many say distilled is best and if you are on free prescriptions then you should be able to get it.  As my area is a very hard water area and most kitchen last only around 12 - 18 months before you need to replace them.

If I do get a new machine I am thinking about asking for distilled water so that it protects the very expensive machine.  Also because I have some many allergies it would be safer for me too use.

Hi Kath, well my water has just arrived and there is 25L of it; they have sent Purified and not Distilled Water though. I am in the fortunate position of not having to pay for my prescriptions so I got it without any charge.

When I put my request in at the GP surgery I wrote a note saying: I have been advised by the hospital that I should use Distilled Water in my CPAP machine. I normally purchase this myself in quantities of 25L. The hospital has also advised me that I can get this on prescription. Well it worked

Good luck to you all, I think we have all worked well towards this and deserve a little reward (even if it is only water)

Yes, I'll be sharing this news June and look forward to your confirmation on size.

Great news June and the other customer I was talking about also got purified water.  If you look at the article I posted further up the thread it seems purified is just as good and in summing up it quoted:-

"The only difference between distilled and purified water is distilled water goes through distillation while purified water goes through other processes such as reverse osmosis, ion exchange, Ozonation, sand filtration, etc.

.....................................................So do you choose distilled or purified water? Both are free of bacteria and most impurities – so the difference lies in the price."

So yes, this was an interesting topic and one I'll certainly be sharing with the newsletter list and in other places, so let's see if we all get some on prescription.

Cheers everyone

Purified Water is listed in the British Pharmacopœia (the UK register of medicinal standards).  Distilled Water is not.

At the last SATAday conference they mentioned that you can get distilled water on prescription.  But when I asked my GP he wasnt keen on the idea as he said that I don't use enough to have it on prescription.

I wonder why your GP didn't want to prescribe it Dee. Hmm.....

GP are pressurized to do their jobs and are not authorized to diagnose sleep apnea and would suspect their fear of their masters the government in effect licence them to practice medicines in the first place and limit prescription to recognized procedure

It should have said Purified water & not distilled.  I will try and get an appointment with my GP tomorrow as I need to ask him about increasing my anti-depressant as my depression hasnt improved.

Dee

sunlight is the best antidepressant

Hopefully your depression will improve when you get sorted out properly Dee.  See if you can get your GP to do blood tests on vitamin D too, as many people with sleep apnoea have low levels of this and need supplements.  It's important to get them checked though as self-medicating with vitamin D can be toxic.

I have been getting Vitamin D on prescription for nearly 4 years now.
