New Year's resolutions rarely work do they?

Let's all try to get more sleep and use our equipment as much as is humanly possible. Try to drink less alcohol or eat immediately before going to bed. No naps on the settee without the cpap attached. Where weight is an issue, be sensible and try to not slip into bad eating habits if you can stop yourselves.

It is only ourselves whom we punish when we eat too much or drink too much alcohol. (That doesn't even take into account - smoke too much)  The lovely food, drink and ciggies give immediate pleasure but the sleep apnoea symptoms afterwards are horrible and we can improve our situations so much with a little more self discipline. (I include myself absolutely and completely in this!!!! We are all human and all make mistakes)

Good luck everyone and start afresh if you need to. Previous mis-management of our conditions is history. Let it go and take from where-ever you are now!

I am listening to myself here! I will do my best. This is my resolution. Anyone want to join me in this?

Thank you for your ongoing support, without which the last 15 days would have been unbearable.

After two weeks on a CPAP I think I got a 4-hour stretch of sleep last night, and have more energy today than I have for years. I've just got my fingers crossed for tomorrow!!

Mike, you will get more and more as it goes on and if you hit a hurdle one night remember each night is a new night.

Kath, would love to swap countries with you but I don't think that is going to happen lol. I keep my mask on through all weather conditions, I have a small fan running in my bedroom on warm nights to try to circulate the air so it gives me some relief. I don't like leaving the airconditioning on overnight. Thanks your you concerns though.

Your response to this thread has been overwhelming, everyone, and so pleased to hear how much the forum's helping you (me included).  Great tips and reminders from Rosemary, good to hear how hard Richard's working on behalf of drivers with OSA and FANTASTIC news from Suzie.  Looking forward to another year in supporting each other and reaching out to the new members who find us.  Don't forget to log in as often as you can so you don't miss any new posts and a chance to learn from and help others.

I am so pleased for you and glad you decided to have another test done...brilliant result.  I'm just about to start another diet for 2012 but I don't hold our hope of coming off sleep apnoea simply because I used to be such a loud snorer when I was younger and at that time I was not over weight and did struggle with energy levels.   People could hear me snoring on the next floor!  I would definitely consider having another sleep study done after losing weight just to see if the sleep apnoea disappears.  Thanks for sharing your good news and long may it continue.  I hope 2012 is the beginning of a new life that you should saver and enjoy.

Sorry I haven't been on here much but I do have some amazing news to share with you ::::::drum roll::::::::

I KNOW LONGER HAVE SLEEP APNOEA!!!!!!!! I recently had another sleep study done and it revealed that I have gone from 35+ apnoeas an hour (when first diagnosed) to under 7 an hour. The hospital I attend does not treat anyone with less than 10 apnoea's an hour and they have sent me and my GP a letter stating that  I have 'resolved my obstructive sleep apnoea with weight loss' and there need no further treatment and can cease wearing my cpap machine!!!!!!!

As some of you may already know, I have lost almost 10 stone in weight (with Slimming World)over the last 3 years and it has honestly been the best thing I could ever have done especially for my general health & well being ----- not having to wear my cpap is the best thing ever ( even after 4+ years I never really grew to love it even though I knew my life depended on it) and is a HUGE bonus to the weight loss!!! 

It feels very new and a little odd at the moment not having sleep apnoea but Im feeling great physically and not missing it at all and at the moment show no signs of tiredness etc. so long may it last.

I know weight loss might not be the answer to everyones problem and I know how hard it can be to lose weight especially when you are so fatigued and worn out (especially when you crave sugar etc just to give you a little bit of energy to get through the day) BUT it really does help even if it doesn't cure everyones sleep apnoea! Less weight equals less stress and strain on our already tired bodies so anything we can try has to be worth a go I'm sure you will agree? 

I hope you don't mind me sharing this news with you all here and if my success can encourage or motivate even just one person to lose a few pounds then I will be even happier...... there is hope!!!!!!!!

I know I've already shared the fact that my weight loss has helped to bring my apnoea events right down but my hospital is certain that I am not cured. Although I registered very few apnoeas, they were a mix of obstructive, mixed and centrals and I have had to come to terms with the probability that I won't ever be cured. I am surpised that a hospital won't treat someone who has five to nine apnoeas per hour. This is definitley not what my hospital says.

It is great news for you Suzie. I have lost close to eight and half stone now and live in hope.
