Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Except for one or two visits to the toilet during the early hours i now seem to wake up feeling reasonably refreshed at 7am and remain so until about 10.30 11.0, after which i feel really drowsy.I have to endure this until mid afternoon when it lessens. the quattro mask and humidifier seem to seal properly and i will see if this week i am still experiencing this problem. I wonder is my occupation as a new taxi driver could be a mental strain and be the main cause of this difficulty. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Mental strain, such as with a new job, can cause tiredness, but before you put it down to this it's wise to look at other areas.  Are you new to CPAP?  Have you been checked for diabetes and under-active thyroid, which a lot of sleep apnoea sufferers also have?

Couple of toilet visits? - avoid tea/coffee after 7ish since caffiene is a natural diuretic, better still NO caffiene - you'll cope. Also no alcohol !!

If the above don't help I agree with Kath to get yourself checked for diabetes - high blood sugars make your body try to get rid of the excess by urination which makes you thirsty and here we go again...........!

Tony, As Kath asked, Are you new to CPAP?, I found that tired feeling mid morning for a while until I started getting used to CPAP. As everybody is different getting more oxygen in your body can have different effects on each of us. I don't disagree with the others that it wouldn't hurt to eliminate any other reasons especially being a Taxi driver.

Hi Tony - I was wondering if it could be a blood sugar problem.  You get tired after lunch, so it might be.  Any chance you may be pre-diabetic?

The body has natural highs and lows throughout the 24 hour cycle. It is very common to get tired around or after lunch. A good breakfast will help fight this. Most of us will experience a period of wakefulness if we are up around 1 am as well. These highs and lows are very normal.

I recommend that everyone read "The Promise of Sleep" by Dr. William Dement.

Thanks for the reminder Rock.  I bought the book and haven't read it yet.  Will put it on my 'to do' list which is getting longer by the day ;)

That book has been the single best sleep read to date. It was my first. I have read it 5 times since. I recommend it to all of my patients and make it mandatory for all of my trainees.

Hello - I agree with everyone,  yes get yourself checked out - though I have other problems on top and I am always tired, but within a couple of hours of crawling out of bed I feel so tired I could cry and whatever energy I have left drains and I usually end up falling asleep despite fighting it and this continues throughout the day. None of the doctors can agree what the cause is despite broken sleep and still having events ... but your own GP can check the obvious and being safe is better than sorry.

The thing is to find out if your cpap is actually stopping the events - or just lessening them ...
is it possible to take a break with a cat nap when you feel the most tired??

good luck and keep on fighting :)

Jackie, Have you had an in lab sleep study?

You should sleep with your PAP as much as possible. Not using it for a nap shouldn't hurt you though.

Hi - no in lab sleep study, just a box overnight from the chest place when I was literally walking dead (and a brain tumour)  and was told 69% and then a long wait for a cpap as do not have anything in our nhs area and a continued fight to try and get better mask each visit because of the problems ...  I was even trying to sleep for a while with holding onto the nose pillars to stop leaks as nothing else worked and I really had to insist they do something as I was desperate.

they just say well done for using it for so many hours bye ! - once a year when they check the machine now.

I usually fall asleep unintending (oh is there such a word???) as I try to fight it but when I am feeling ill exhausted I go to bed for an hour or two in the hope of refreshment ... which although I feel less exhausted, refreshed is not the word I would use lol ...

Falling asleep without the cpap means I will be jumping and gasping and dry throat andmouth even worse and I can hear myself doing it and yet cannot do anything ... horrible !

It has become a way of life now I suppose and the days of feeling good are not even a memory with my health problems on top. when one of my friends has a moan not having money or not winning the lottery, and they are in good health  I always say - but you have your health and that is more valuable as money cannot buy that.

Oh for a lottery win .... to make ill health more bearable lol ! :) :) and to buy an auto pap with a heatedhose lol

sorry am side tracking here

thanks for the info xxxx

Did you have the tumor removed? My mom had one in her frontal lobe the size of a tennis ball. It was a long recovery for all of us. Unfortunately her cancer may have returned. We find out tomorrow.

I will say a prayer for your Mom, I am so sorry to hear how she is, no matter how bad we are there is always someone worse.

Tumour is behind my eye and caused me the loss of sight in it and because of my poor health they do not want to operate unless it becomes no alternative as I probably would not survive the operation so fingers crossed and God willing it grows no more or other changes.

got pleurosy at the moment and that is soooo painful and feel even worse than usual

thanks RockRpsgt and I do hope everything is fine for your mom, please let us know.

hugs jacksxxxx
