Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Hi, I'm back. I went to my sleep doc today and got switched to the mask that covers my nose and mouth because I wake up with a dry mouth and a sore throat. The only problem I have now is connecting it to the hose that was originally connected to the nasal pillow mask from Resmed.  This new mask is a loaner and it is a Resmed which is a Mirage Quattro. I can't figure out how to hook it on to the hose I have. I guess I should have asked the lady to hook it up for me and show me how. While I was at the Sleep Clinic the place went in lockdown, because there was a credit union next door that got robbed. Go figure! Was there an extra half hour and I don't know why I didn't think to ask how to hook it up to the hose I already have. My pressure has been turned up to 14 since I was having sleep apnea events still. 5.1 per hour. (better than the 23 times per hour that it was at first) I also have homework where I have to make sure I use it 6 hours per night, and keep track of it on a paper they gave to me. I was already having trouble keeping it on for 4 hours per night, but if I don't sleep for 6 hours I have to make it up during the day, even if I am awake. I have no paperwork for this new mask and I do know the email address for it. I don't know if I should contact www.resmed.com or www.ezsleepsupplies.com. I guess the hose would come from resmed and the machine from phillips. I have tried to figure out how to connect it and can't seem to figure it out. Thanks for all your previous help. S.K.

Sandy, I use the same mask, it should just plug in, I would ring the people you got it from and ask them they have to help you.

The Full  Face masks take some getting used too but are probably better for you in the long run, it sounds like yu are a mouth breather. I can help with a few tips with the mask but you need to get the hose fitting write first. Are they very far from your place? If not can you take the hose and mask in to show them. Let me know and good to hear you are back and now have to get you using it all night.

Hi Terry! Well I have to wait until Monday because it is the weekend and the Sleep Center times on Monday 1-5pm, so I will be there for sure. My fiance has to go too to get some kind of device that he has to wear on his wrist to monitor rhythm's and will keep track of his sleep patterns. So for now I am wearing the old mask. Here's something that is confusing. I have a homework sheet from the doctor where I write in how long I wore the mask each night and with the nose pillow mask I wake up with it off, and have no idea when I took it off. How am I supposed to know that when I am on a sleep med? I know there would or might be some that might think I am making excuses but I'm not. I'm just frustrated by it. I think the full face mask will probably be harder to take off in my sleep and I hope it is hard to get it off during sleep.

Just check down your hose Sandy, as it could be that the adapter from the last mask is stuck down there preventing you from connecting the new mask.

Sandy, I was going to suggest what Kath suggested. Not sure if you can take a photo of both ends and show us, like you did with the rats photo.

With your homework, check your manual you should be able to see nightly usage on the screen of your machine.

I know you have told me before but what brand and model is it and I'll look it up for you.

Then you will know exactly how much you are using it.

When you get fully set up I can show you how to read the data from your machine, but you need to get the mask right and be fully compliant before you take on new things like reading data.

Thanks! I went to the DME today and they showed me how to do it. I was afraid if I pulled something off the tube i might break it. She showed me where on machine to figure out therapy hours and blower hours. They are very helpful and you guys are very helpful too.I know someone said to put pics on here of my hose like i did the rats but i guess i dont need to now since the DME showed me. In photos it says you can click & drag photos and it looks like the only way to get them on here. The first one I uploaded and after that for more pics it wanted me to click & drag and i have not figured that out yet. I use laptops. My good laptop crashed so I have to get it fixed. Well tonight will be my first time with the full face mask. Wish me luck. This one looks harder to take of when I am asleep. That is the problem I was having with the other nose pillow mask and last night they showed me on my c-pap machine that i took it off 36 minutes, when i fell asleep.I hate that I was doing that with no memory of it. The machine comes on automatically when I put mask off. I wonder if it turns off automatically?  That seroquel I take knocks me out. Anyway thanks to everyone here. Sandy

Sandy, it was me that suggested the photo but don't worry about that now, just have a good sleep tonight. You can still fill out your homework each day from the previous night. I'll send you some tips on what to do with the full face mask. Just try to have a good sleep, relax and see how you go.

Thanks Terry, my fiance had to go with me to the sleep clinic too. He has to wear something on his wrist that measures the ultraviolet spectrum light waves (whatever that means) and it also keeps track of when he sleeps, when he wakes, or walks around. He has to keep track of it too and what and when he drinks, weather it's water, coffee, alcohol, or tea. He has a bad coffee addiction and he's on oxygen for COPD. He fully wakes up almost every hour during the night. He will be sleeping and suddenly he's awake and gets up for a while and then go's back to sleep. Then on May 10, 2013 he sees the doctor there who is a pulmonary doctor also. Then they may do a sleep study. He had a sleep study about 2 years ago and it wasnt sleep apnea then. i have heard him a couple times where he was gasping for air during the night and that was scary to us both. It may be insomnia. I guess we will find out. He is so tired all the time from that fractured sleep that there are times he just has to take a nap. He drinks decaf coffee at night, but I heard it has caffeine in it. too.

So I practiced using the new mask and it was leaking air like crazy around my mouth so I tightened the straps that are on the bottom to where it didn't leak and it was so tight! If I make it any looser then it leaks and makes noise like farts! (excuse my bluntness) Of course it gave me & my fiance a good laugh! Has anyone ever tried putting reading glasses on underneath the full face mask? I thought it would be a good idea to read in the bedroom while having it on with my reading glasses on. Would that screw it up? That way I can get extra time on the therapy hours. There also is a screw like thing that is over my eyebrows when it is on and I tightened it all the way but it is uncomfortable. Air blows out that area between the eyebrows too but I think it's supposed to. When I breathe with the mask on at 14 pressure it is like almost breathing against the wind when I exhale. And the c-pap is Phillips resperonics. Wish me luck!

Sansy, there are 70 - 80 different sleep disorders out there so hopefully they find something. Can't help you with the reading glasses, the full face mask takes a lot of adjusting, if it leaks from the bottom tighten the bottom straps, if it leaks in your eyes tighten the top straps. You need it a little tight as during the night our muscles in our face relax and the mask becomes loose but not too tight. Wwhen adjusting it only move the straps a small amount at a time. Try moving the dial in and out in small increments like 3 at a time. Do you have the hose coming from above your head? that will help, let me know how you go tomorrow.

You might end up breaking your reading glasses Sandy if you put them under your mask.  I had the same problem when first on therapy as I always read before I sleep, so I bought myself an Amazon Kindle and you can increase the font size which meant I could read without glasses.

Kath has all the good idea's, I hope it's nearly your bed time Kath.

Wrong time zone Terry - it's nearly dinner time so for once you've not caught me out up too late LOL.
