It's a tough one to answer Dennis, as there are still no hard and fast rules at our UK airports.  I have always managed fine with different airlines by having the CPAP Luggage Tag attached to my equipment.  I do carry a letter from the hospital, but have never been asked to show it.  However, some people have had problems so to play safe you should ring them for advice.  I wrote a blog on travelling with CPAP http://www.sleepapnoeablog.com/travelling-on-holidaysvacations-trip... and we also had a long discussion on the forum a while back about this http://hope2sleepguide.co.uk/forum/topics/airport-hand-baggage-allo...

Hope this helps.

I suggest you print out a copy and take it with you :)

Well spotted Jonathan, and a sign that at last the airlines are taking notice.

hi all

i have recently travelled with ryanair to spain and took my machine with me, i carried it in the standard ResMed bag with no tags on

prior to travel i called the airline special assistance line, really easy to deal with i have to say and i was expecting the worst

basically you give them your flight numbers or booking number, go through some security questions to confirm its your booking, they then issue you with a a standard letter that gives you exemption to travel with the machine on flights as an extra to your 1 piece of hand luggage, they email this and you just print it out and take it with you

i also had a letter from my sleep clinic stating that i needed the machine, think this is just a standard letter also

i was stopped at the gate both times as i was obviously carrying 2 pieces of hand luggage, but as soon as i showed the letter from ryanair they waved me on through, i was not stopped at any other point, question was asked at security but i replied it was medical equipment and was waved through without showing letters

on a furthur point if you travel regularly you can obtain a letter from ryanair and exemption letter that covers you for 6 months, all you need is have your passport to hand when you call them as they need passport number etc

hope this helps

That's excellent news Simon - thanks for letting us know!

Just remembered a 'phone call I got a few months back about someone who was travelling with Thomas Cook and had rang them for advice...... They were told they had to have a medical tag attached to the CPAP bag and also a medical equipment sticker.  The lady asked me where she could get them from, and bearing in mind I'm not aware of such a thing I told her to photocopy the CPAP Luggage Tag she was purchasing from us and stick it on her bag.  These airlines and holiday companies need to have proper rules, and just like the DVLA, it all depends on who they speak to.

I was curious whether anyone has used the CPAP Total Face Masks and could pass on their observations? I've been using an Airfit F20 for years which is fine apart from the permanent red mark on the bridge of my nose, and have recently tried the…See More

Pressure waking me up. Belching and wind

HiI'm using the prisma smart max machine. Initially I was just on a nasal mask, this changed as I was sleeping with my mouth open. I then went to face and nose mask and complained of bad wind and belching. Sometimes the pressure in the night was…See More
