Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Welcome to our Forum - Feel Free to Introduce Yourself Here.

Welcome to the Hope2SleepGuide Forum, which is a service run by the Hope2Sleep Charity founded by Kath Hope with a marvellous team of trustees and volunteers.

Kath herself has severe sleep apnoea and hypoventilation/hypercapnia, and has used CPAP for several years and is now on non-invasive ventilation.  Our trustees and volunteers are all either sufferers of sleep disordered breathing or clinicians/medics working in this field, and most importantly, we are all passionate in supporting (with empathy) others and raising awareness to help people live healthier and more energised lives.

Whilst we do not give medical advice, more often than not, with support, tips and knowledge, people can overcome any problems experienced with our therapy, and there is a whole page dedicated to this on the website http://www.hope2sleep.co.uk/tips-for-problems-sleeping-with-cpap-or...

Please come and join us, and don’t feel obligated to use your ‘real’ name if you prefer to remain anonymous as this is a public forum.  Don’t be shy in posting and sharing, as we’re all in this together and to help each other.

Best Wishes for good sleep!

Hi Sandy, and a very warm welcome, and can I just say that we have a lovely bunch of people on this forum, and we don't tolerate judgmental comments as we're here to give support, advice and encouragement to our fellow sufferers so don't be worrying about that - in fact I applaud your openness with your introduction

Many people take their masks off unintentionally when first on CPAP, but as  your body acclimatises to it, this gets better.  However, today I've struggled with tiredness and when I checked my last night's readings I discovered I took my mask off after only 45 minutes of sleep.  When I woke up without the mask on this morning I'd assumed I'd taken it off in the early hours, but apparently not!!

At this stage, don't be worrying about your other medication, as you may find you can easily come off it or cut down in the future once you feel the benefits of good CPAP therapy.  Incidentally, some of your mental health problems could be due to your years of undiagnosed sleep apnoea, and I wrote a blog on this a while ago http://www.sleepapnoeablog.com/the-link-between-sleep-apnoea-depres... and I happen to know lots of sleep apnoea sufferers with bi-polar and there are a lot of people with schizophrenia too!

If you're on Facebook a lot you may like to see my FB Page https://www.facebook.com/hope2sleep.co.uk and I also admin a very active FB Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/218156906792/.

Incidentally, I love nature, play both keyboard/piano and love animals, but I would be nervous around rats

Kath, if you haven't already realised, I'm the one who suggested Sandy join a while ago and I asked her to post a bit about her issues now, I don't think I know anyone that loves Rats more than Sandy (actually I don't know anyone that loves rats, so she has it on her own). She has been on CPAP for a couple of weeks and struggling like a lot of us at the start. You gave her some good advice on the mask, that's why I suggested she come on here.

Her other major issue is to do with compliance, I have copied what she told us and she uses a Phillips Resperonics REMstar Auto A-Flex, I think thats what you use, Kath, do you have an answer to her question below, I use a Resmed so

don't see what she does, when she gets her issues sorted, I'll show her how to use sleepyhead.

"I also signed a paper that is titled..."CPAP COMPLIANCE FOR CONTINUED INSURANCE COVERAGE" So after the first 3 months I must use the cpap at least 4 hours per night for 21 out of 30 day's. Now since I am a newbie at this I am getting concerned because I take the mask off in my sleep and when I wake up I discover the mask laying there and the cpap machine is turned off. I also looked at the different settings on it and got totally confused. I know there is an sd card in there somewhere and i was wondering if I could accidently mess it up? I looked at the info setting under status and it said the sd card was unlocked and had Free space 100 % free, so that makes me wonder if it is showing that I used it at all? Under phone in setting it says..therapy - 58.2 and blower hours - 73.8 and Days > 4 and on the right of that it says the number 6. So can anyone explain these numbers to me? I am really confused and worried about not using it enough to be 70 % compliance for the insurance company to keep paying for it? I wondered if I could accidently mess it up because they told me that only the doctor could access the sd card but it said the sd card was unlocked, so I don't get that"

I just saw this post.  I am on Daily Strength too as Spring Lady and know Sandy there as Samloves rats.  I hve the same machine.  I did not sign a paper like Sandy because I did a purchase through insurance rather than a rental.  The manual says status means displays information sent from a peripheral.  I have been on CPAP since 12/13/12 and only recently has it changed from unlocked 100% to unlocked 99%. (The total time I have slept way more than 4 hours and use the machine every time I sleep). Phone in is the total therapy hours for the machine, the total blower hours nad the total number of days used when the use was greater than 4 hours since the machine was last reset  by the DME/RT.  Days > 4 is the cumulative number of sessions that  exceeded 4 hours.  There whoudl be a breakdown for a day (which is the night you just completed), 7 days and 30 days.  I hope this helps and I am sure that Kath will be able to give more specific details about the numbers.

I don't exactly have that on my machine Terry and Sandy - it doesn't say 'status' or whether the card is locked or not, so it's perhaps a different model to mine.  How about downloading Sleepyhead to see if you can see your results there from the SD card?

Mary, I was the one who suggested Sandy go off Seroquel with her Drs authority and help, the reason why is because one of the side effects is it can cause diabeties, Sandy's blood sugar is 6.6, the blood sugar level for diabeties is 6.5, she has to have another blood test in a month to say whether she now has diabeties or not, the last thing she needs with Bipolar and OSA is diabeties and hopefully she won't get it. I am helping a friend who also has Bipolar and was on 3 times the amount Sandy was on and she will be off it in a couple of weeks after she was addicted to it for years, her blood sugar is also at levels very close to diabeties and she doesn't want to get it. I am working with her and her Dr to get her off her meds, she is also on Stilnox and Thorazine for the Bipolar, just wanted to clarify why I suggested she come off it with her Drs authority.

Sandy, I could have written the parts of your post on being Bipolar.  No one has ever suggested I stop my meds because of my OSA.  In the doses that you use Seroquel should not affect your sleep apnea.  I just came out of a very difficult time with major depression (I am Bipolar, too) with the help of my CPAP and different meds.  To be dramatic my life depends on my meds.  You should have no trouble reaching your compliance numbers.  I took my mask off during the night in the beginning, too, but that didn't last for long.  I'm glad you're getting support because your therapy goes so much smoother when you know you're not alone.

Mary

Thanks Kath, I was going to get Sandy to download sleepyhead a bit later, just thought she should get the mask usage sorted and get the hang of CPAP before introducing something else to her. From what Wanda was saying it sounds like she is Ok as long as she users her CPAP as long as possible each night. I'll contact Sandy via PM, her DME should be able to help in the short term.

Thanks Kath!  Yes I am new to all this (for real!) It is really weird how I got diagnosed. Last summer I wet the bed 4 different times! How unusual for me! So I went to my gp and he suggested a possiblility of OSA and ordered a refereral (dang I can't spell)  to a pulmonary/sleep specialist At first I thought it sounded ridiculous and thought maybe it was the seroquel having me knocked out, but yet I had been on it for years. I was thinking that my boyfriend had sleep apnea, not me, but to my surprise I have it. So I had the 1st sleep study and found out I did have moderate to severe OSA that I stop breathing 23 times an hour and in 37 minutes of rem sleep I stopped breathing every single minute, sometimes up to a full minute. Boy was that a shockarooo! Then I had the 2nd sleep study, I think it was tritration sleep study with a c-pap machine. I didn't sleep much that night. my seroquel didn't even put me to sleep and all night long I kept thinking, When am I going to get to sleep? The next morning they said my brain waves said I slept, but I felt as if I was awake the whole night. I got the c-pap on March 18, 2013. I was supposed to go as a walkin to the sleep center today but I had gotten up very early along with my bf to go have our taxes done and only 3 hours of sleep last night. As i said I love our pet rats and in the SA group in Daily Strength I have said I am noctural like our rats. I sleep during the day and am up at night. Now I think the rat's are confused about when nights are because when we are awake at night they are asleep. (poor babies!) We have had this backward sleep cycle mixed up for about 3 or 4 years now. (ever since we got the internet..Duh..an addiction I do think) Before that we used to watch tv, but would make it to bed at least by 3 am. Now it's 6 or 7 or 8 am! Maybe if we keep going like that it will eventually move up to midnight (lol!) I read the article on OSA being linked to depression and was shocked. What if I was misdiagnosed all these years? For personal reasons I don't think so because I had a very traumatic childhood and 1st marriage and divorce which I won't go into here. let's just say it was very very bad.  Anyway, thanks for your help and I will keep coming here!  Sandy

Yes Sandy, wetting the bed is a common sign and happens to loads of people, but they're not all brave enough to admit it

Hope you can get into the sleep centre soon for their help.

You've obviously had a lot of stress in your life, but I'd hazard a guess that if you'd been diagnosed back then you would have been able to handle it all much better, as nobody can handle stress when they're sleep deprived - it's hard enough just to handle 'normal' life!!  Anyway, the good news is that you're diagnosed and being treated now, so everything should get much better soon, once you're on successful therapy.  I've always been a night owl too, but not as bad as you.  Try to gradually adjust your body clock so that you can get your circadian rhythm back in sync which will make a big difference to you.  Mary, who has responded will be a good source of help to you too, and she knows how her bi-polar worsens when she has problems with her therapy.  Safe restorative sleep is meant to be 1/3rd of our lives for a good reason, and it also affects our hormones, which has a knock-on effect on other parts of our body (like weight and diabetes to name just 2).  Speaking of which........ I'm an hour past my curfew here in the UK so must get to bed now...... Good Night!

Thanks Terry for writing me! Yes we do love our rat's! We have 2 females and 1 male. We keep the boy (Sydney) apart from the girls (Trixi and Sable) A week or so ago we were letting Sydney hang out with the girls while I watched them but I wanted Sydney to get Trixi p.g (yes it's crazy I know) Until Sydney got in a fight with Sable and she was bleeding, it looked worse than it actually was. Why would i want more rat's? Well rat's have a short life span of about 2 - 4 years and one girl is almost 2 yrs old and shows signs of slowing down and not wanting to do much but Trixi is a year old, so my idea was let Trixi have babies. Keep 2 females, give the rest away. I got bawled out for this is a rat support group and found out that if they have never had babies from 6 months of age I could be putting her life in danger, so now I'm bummed and hoping that she isn't p.g. Anyway..I got carried away there and should not be talking about our beloved ratties but about OSA. Anyway you gave me info about the numbers on my machine and I will be checking that out a bit later. thanks!

No worries Sandy, we will get there eventually and I love your rat story, although this is a SA site, it's always good to her about other people lives.

Thanks Wanda aka/ Spring lady! Ok I will check those numbers out when I get around to it soon. I have so much to do. Tonight I plan on tying that mask on to my head if I have to (LOL) but I might try to do the elastic thing that someone in the SA group in Daily Strength said they did when I get the chance to get the elastic and velcro. yet as I said I did keep it on last night for the 3 hours of sleep I had. I was supposed to go to bed at least by midnight and get up at 6:30 am and be at a place at 9am that was doing taxes and home heating credits for free for people with disabiities and low income and I just had trouble going to bed that early as I have probably already said something about being nocturnal to Kath, and it started before we got the internet about 3 1/2 years ago. I was already a night owl then and then when we got the web it was so hard to get off of it. It still is but I enjoy a good book before i go to sleep and tonight I am going to take my book into the bedroom and put the c-pap on early while I am reading. Have a nice day or night!

Thanks Mary! I am so glad you came out of depression. I know how bad it is and how dibilitaing it is (i need a dictionary in my browser) I have suffered with depression all of my life but was diagnosed with depression in 1990 and then with bi-polar II in 2001. I had many severe episodes. Not as many and as severe when I found the true love of my life in 2001. Being loved and accepted for who you are and being soulmates and being able to love him I believe has been a tremendous help though. Also when I was raising my 3 kids in the 80's and 90's alone made it tougher. But they turned out great!  my 33 year old son may have bi-polar too but doesnt want to seek help because he is going to be strong and tough it out on his own! (not good..but I can't change his mind, so that is that)  and I too can not live without my meds. I would rather be stable minded then not, that is for sure! How long have you had OSA? I don't really know how long I had it undiagnosed but when my boyfriend first moved in with me in 2001 I once kicked him in his sleep in his back and had no recollection of it and wasn't on sleep meds then. I was so sorry that that had happened. He was scared to sleep with me at first and thank God it never happened again but he told me I always kicked my legs around in my sleep, except on seroquel the sleep med I'm on. Thanks for writing me!
