Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

11 days into CPAP, and I am getting used to it, ironing out teething problems without problems. I have a Phillips System One REMstar Pro with humidifier (set on 2), and a Fisher & Paykel FlexiFit 407 mask.

I have developed a terrible chest infection, and am seeing the GP tonight.  Is there any advice concerning the CPAP and its settings that could help?

Sorry to hear this has happened so soon into your treatment.  I would try turning up the humidification to No 3, but when you do this wrap something around the tube to insulate it (as I know you've had some trouble with 'rainout' - your hose cover is on it's way to you today so should be with you tomorrow).  Make sure the tube is elevated too!  Hopefully, your GP will give you some antibiotics to move the infection faster, but through the night just take little sips of water when needed (not big quantities).  Hope you're better soon.

My gut reaction would be to lower the humidity?

Well then it's probably another case of what works for one doesn't work for another......I always raise mine if I feel a bit chesty to increase the moisture.

Someone who's just seen this post, but isn't a member, has asked me to remind you to be extra keen on washing the mask and the hose whilst you have the infection.

...Antibiotics..and yeh, raise the humidity... although I cannot see the logic in giving the infection the warmth and moisture it needs..  just as I was getting used to CPAP too...

The Quack said raise it... he will have his reasons, and I trust him, even if it doesn't seem logical to me.... setting it to 3 tonight... and hoping that I am not drowning in snot by morning, lol

I have my humidity flat out all the time - on dry air at the moment awaiting replacement humidifier :(

How about trying a night or two with no humidification and a night or two with your humidifier at max - find out which gives you the best results with this particular infection.

Your lungs are warm and moist anyway, with or without a humidifier, so we are talking comfort while the antibiotics do their work - not about breeding more bugs ot fewer.

I turned it up to 3 last night, and it was a surprisingly comfortable night. Ok, I coughed up a plate of ectoplasm in the morning, but I actually slept very well.

Had my pressure upped to 14 a week ago, and was given the F&P nasal pillow mask..... absolutely fantastic. My AHI has gone down to 3, even with a cold, and for the first time in years I am sleeping right through the night without waking at all. (9+ hours). I couldn't recommend nasal pillows more highly if you can keep your trap shut at night.

Great news for you Darryl, and good to hear you've found the ideal mask for you so early on in your treatment :)

"Just to tidy this up, I finally had an in-person review by my sleep clinic yesterday, who agreed the ResMed AirSense 10 was "wheezy" and replaced the machine."

1st time and I’ve failed the mask leak test

Hi everyone, today I received my rental kit - prisma smart max, plus a Philips dreamwear mask which I’ve been wearing unconnected to try and get used to it. I just did a mask fit test using a medium mask and got a constant red/orange leak warning…See More
