Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Been wondering why I've been feeling a bit dry and croaky in the mornings, looks like the humidifier has failed on my machine.

Great timing!

Oh No!!  Good luck in sourcing one quickly at this time of the year Symmit!  Pity you're not with our local hospital as you could have got one there.  (Wonder if it's possibly to arrange that if they do your brand of machine).

Well, replacement humidifier arrived yesterday. As I've now had the experience of a couple of weeks of non-humidified air versus humidified then I'll give a big "YES" for the humidifier.

Additionally, I've bought a second machine, the old one (with the new humidifier) is now consigned to travel duties (I travel a lot) and the new, F&P Icon, is at the bedside

I would hate going 2 whole weeks without humidification :(

Do you like the Icon better than your other machine then?  I also have a different one for travel.  The Respironics System One stays by my bedside and the Sleep Cube comes away with me.  I also have a 2nd Hose Lift permanently packed, as I'm too lazy to dismantle it - even though it takes less than a minute LOL.

Only one night with the Icon so far - certainly can get the humidity I like, and the heated hose is brilliant too! Very quiet but surprisingly basic (no auto start, can't seem to change the ramp time, no flex) considering the price of the machine - supposedly the best humidifier around though.

Oximiter says the night was a good night, haven't got the software to download the data from the unit yet!

F & P certainly beat everyone for humidity :)  I trialled this machine for the local clinic and if your minimum pressure is set at 4 or under the Ramp doesn't work.  I remember this, as I had to raise the minimum the first night.  Shame there's no autostart, but at least you have your music :D

I use an Icon Auto.

Well, two nights and my initial thoughts are:

Good: Compact size, styling, heated hose (brilliant!), the humidifier. Sensawake seems to work well, wake up wondering if it's on because it's dropped the pressure.

Not so good: No auto start. Ramp time - not sure what it is and if it can be changed.

Not sure: Seems noisy compared to my Hoffrichter, though whether that's hose/mask noise (not got a cover on the hose, is it sensible to put a cover on a heated hose?).

Rock: you might know this - is there a longer hose than standard (I have a 10ft one on my other machine due to the layout of my bedroom, the icon is precariously close to my head...)

Well, one of the 'not so good' points can be sorted, as you change the ramp time as long as your minimum pressure is set above 4.  Here's how:-

On/Off and Ramp
• When the selection circle is at the top of the Menu System a quick press to the SmartDial™ will start therapy.
• To activate Ramp, press the SmartDial™ again and hold for
3 seconds. The Ramp symbol will appear .
• To stop and start pressure delivery, press the SmartDial™ when the selection circle is at the top point.
• The lock symbol will appear if the Menu System is left idle for 10 minutes. To reactivate turn the SmartDial™ a half turn in either direction (180°).

Our clinic aren't so keen on the machine as they find the settings etc. rather fiddly, but I have to say I didn't have too much bother with it during the week I tested it.

There's no problem with putting your hose cover on a heated hose (I checked this out with Resmed regarding their heated hose for a customer) and it should make it quieter.  I like the covers to hide the clinical look of the hoses - maybe this is only important though from a woman's point of view :-D

Thanks Kath - I've got the manuals for the machine and have acquired the software also, it's very comprehensive and of course you can set the settings from the software and transfer them on the memory stick.

My hose cover is in the wash (I got two off you when I started therapy!) so I'll slide it on tonight.

I'm liking the feel of the therapy now after night three with the icon - the warmer air is very nice and last night our heating decided not to work, yet I never woke up!

For those who like graphs...

I have only had this machin3e for about 2 weeks(12 days). In that same amount of time I have worked 10 days. I just have not yet had the time to play with it. Is your other hose compatible? If not can it be made compatible. As simple as these machines are I would bet that you could by a piece or 2 at your local hardware stare to at least try it out.

Im not quite understanding the graphs. Do the pulse rate and SPo2 summary go to together timewise?  If so Why don't the events under each match up? I like graphs but these are not telling me much.
