Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Does anyone experience power cuts at home… if so what do they do.. I know the CPAP machine will just turn off accordingly, but wondered had anyone experience any and what happened.

I did ask the question to my consultant, he said i would just wake up.

Do you know that Electric Power companies hold a register for vunerable people, either using medical equipment of have serious health issues.

I'm with EON and they have a Priority Services Register. so if they have to turn off the power they are aware that its important to let us know. Its free to register and i assume all companies hold a similar list so make sure you get your details added.

However nothing can account for random power outages…so I wondered how it would make me feel if suddenly everything went off in the middle of the night…any thoughts… has this happened to you…what was it like ??

Thanks for the info re the vulnerable list.  I'm with EON so will investigate this.  Take a look at this discussion we had recently on here about power cuts during the recent winds..... POWER CUTS DISCUSSION.

thanks Kath, just been to take a peep.. think it would have to be a pile of cushions.for me!. Power cuts used to be a daily problem in this village, but at least they are slowly coming up to the 21st century!!

I mainly sleep on my back as, i have to wake if i need to turn to my side..  after having my hip replaced and they being insistent that i laid on my back for month,or more to avoid dislocation.

i just got used it. saying all that, i have been told that my snoring was just as bad on my back as laying on my side!! L(

Quote from "CPAP and Ventilator Secrets" (available from www.Hope2Sleep.co.uk)

Some electricity supply companies have a Priority User scheme for customers who rely on essential medical equipment such as ventilators or dialysis machines. Customers can register under this scheme and will be given, as far as possible, priority for restoring their supply in the event of a power failure. Advance notice will be given to the registered customers when the company plans any work in the area which could lead to temporary cuts in their customers’ domestic power supply. Check with your own electricity supplier.

I'm on Eon's register, so far so good with them. I have been on it for a few years now for something else, but called them last month when i got my CPAP to add that to the details.

Apart from power cuts beyond their control they have been ok to deal with.

At the moment its just the fear of the unknown, especially as we have just had a couple of inches of snow this evening, living in a tiny village we are usually the first to have any power problems as much of it is bought to the village by overhead cables…. i think they are slowly trying to get into the 21st century!! lol

I know I worry too much about everything, but I went to pieces with BT when our phone line went down a short while ago. it was off nearly a week. its fine if you have can get good mobile signal , but unfortunately where we live we can't even guarantee we'd be able to make an emergency call. I think any of these essential suppliers really do need to look after their customers xx

My machine sounds an alarm to rouse me if the power fails, or if the mask & tubing get disconnected.
It's a ventilator, not a CPAP, though they do look similar.

I'm not allowed to sleep without it, as I'm not able to breathe unaided during sleep (because of severe scoliosis), and this is slightly fatal :)
So if there's power problems I have to stay awake, or my son comes over so he can poke me if I drop off !
Of course, this means HE has to keep awake too.

I've been on the Priority User's register for years.

On one occasion there was a severe storm which blacked out the town during the night.
I phoned the electricity company to see how long we would be without power and was told it would be many hours, and they couldn't get me back on-line quickly.

So an ambulance came to take me & the machine off to hospital for the night (hospital had switched to its own generator).
I came home in the morning, after breakfast.

well thats what you call great service :)

Must be hard. I guess what has got me through many years of pain because of hip problems is always that there is someone worse off than yourself…. i never gave it a thought when it came to the CPAP machine as i never knew anything about then, until late last year. so its been a huge learning curve for me. You have just taught me some more. I didn't know the machines look similar either.

I'm off to bed now… need to put mine back together first, after cleaning the hose today

Have a good and safe sleep

hugs roz xx

Pressure waking me up. Belching and wind
